I wish I had ordered the GPS version, bluetooth & software for an extra $130 is a good deal.

Oh well.

Got mine, charged it up but I don't plan on using it a lot until I receive my screen protectors from ScreenGuardz.com
oh gosh, you can use it in lieu of the screenguards. it doesn't scratch that easily.
just don't pound on it with your stylus.

What is a good future add-on GPS unit/bundle for the X50v?

Also, thanks for the screen protector link.

My curiosity got to me and I started using it. Tapping won't hurt it, I just won't do any dragging or drawing.

You need 4 things:
  • Read the AximSite.com GPS Talk forum.
  • You'll need a GPS receiver (hardware) such as the Globalstat BT-338 or HAiCOM 405III
Ideally you should look for the Sirfstar III chipset with WAAS enabled
  • GPS software I would go with iGuidance or OCN5, OCN5 is newer.
  • Some sort of mount for your car, either windshield or vent.

Does it give you directions or just the map?

Thanks

Both.

I recommend you do some research on your own, trust me it's painless.

OCN5 review (GPS software) and take a look at the screen shots.

Since the GPS receiever is separate from the Dell Axim PDA, you could use it with a Bluetooth equipped laptop as well. You will need software for your laptop as well. Some software allow you to use it on a PDA and laptop. Which software? SEARCH is your friend.

whatever gps software you get make sure the software does not have crazy activation schemes and is limited to one pda. it would be nicer to install it on your laptop and stuff too.

Just found out mine is shipping today. Good news after a previously listed 8/19 ship date.

It's common knowledge (or should be) that Dell usually overshoots the estimated ship date.

This is always brought up when a digicam/PDA/LCD deal comes up. Now you can warn future n00b's that if it says 2 months from now ... the real estimated ship date is probably 1 month from now

I think they pretty much have to do this. When you order they give you an estimated ship date. If they can't meet that, then they have to notify you of the new ship date, and give you a chance to cancel. If they think they may miss the new ship date, they have to notify you again. However, on the second notice they are required to assume you want to cancel unless you respond letting them know you still want the order. My guess is the meet the first ship date 90% of the time, when they miss the first date they don't want to risk missing the second date so they double their estimate.

Well, they first gave this n00b a ship date of 7/29 and a couple of days later it was 8/19, so I think they must have undershot on the original date.

Basically that's $345.92 shipped but with the $90 (minus discounts) keyboard option. I think the total was $278.42 if I did it without the keyboard.

There are 25% off coupons and $35 off $300 coupons available via eBay. I ended up paying about $10 for the coupons but did so to buy them from somebody with better feedback. This was the item I got my coupons from and they worked without a problem online (duplicated exactly what was shown in the screenshot on eBay). Perhaps you can get the coupons a better/cheaper way but I was in a hurry so I just dished out the $10 for the coupons.

Enjoy!

Check out axim forum for hardware deals. I just picked up one for $278 w/ an extra battery and 2 yr warranty (had to spend $8 on ebay for a coupon), but it was way worth it

the gps and axim work nice. im in ohio on business and stupid me for bringing the GPS but left the PDA at home. is there anyway so that the GPS would work with my laptop? i know i need to get a bluetooth receiver on my laptop, but would that work with a software like, say Microsoft Streets and Trips 2005 or mappoint 2004???

It works great with a laptop. I got mine to work on MS Steets and Trips 2005 and works great with pairing code 2003

First time it failed to link up Using the pairing code 2003, but I then removed the device and rebooted and it works now. Very nice using the GPS on the Hand Held. Its Works really great with the software that came if you have addresses. ONce you have all your destinitions entered in then you can load them again from the (recent ) Link.

Very impressed.
