This does require the 10% off e-mail coupon, but there are so many floating around it should be useful.

Go to Dell SB, search for item "313-1694" This is a Black 16X DVD 48X CDRW combo drive.

$88.25
-$13.24 (15% off auto)
-$7.50 (10% off e-mail)
+ $4.05 (tax, may vary)

Total is only $71.56 shipped.

I know lots of people got cheap Dell 4550s, etc, this drive is faster than the Samsung deal from a wek ago, plus the black faceplate matches a black case.

The Samsung SM-348 combo drive combines CD-RW and DVD-ROM drives into one mechanism. It features 48X write speed, 24X rewrite speed, 48X read speed and 16X DVD read speed. It has an 8 MB capacity buffer memory and reduces noise and vibration with DVA (Dynamic Vibration Absorber). The combo drive has an EIDE/ATAPI interface and a maximum data transfer rate of 7200 KBps.

The Dell? DVD/CD-RW Combination Drive brings all the advantages of a DVD-ROM, a CD-RW, and a CD-ROM to a single drive! This allows you to save valuable bay space in your computer for later expansion. This combo drive offers speeds ranging up to 48X Writing, 24X Re-Writing, 48X CD Reading, and 16X DVD Reading.

How is the Dell faster?

is this specifically for Dell machines, in terms of installation, or can it be installed in a standard 5.25 bay

Is the railing removable?

need to decide b/w this or the samsung?

The bad thing about the Samsung OEM drives vs. the retail drives is only the retail drives have the 8MB of cache memory. The OEM and Bulk drives pack 2MB.

Double check before buying.

I'm currently using the retail version of this drive right now with the new T506 firmware which enables Mt. Rainier (finally).

The loudest part of the drive is the spinup, but that only lasts a few seconds. The drive is the quietest I've ever heard even at maximum seek.

DestruyaUR, can this drive do clone cd? My dell only has two 5' slots. One is for my DVD burner, and the other one is a liteon one right now. If the combo is as good as liteon to write CD, I'll definitely buy one.

CDRLabs certainly thinks so. I haven't done one myself recently, but it performs admirably in literally every other task.

Just some advice that I gave earlier - I DON'T think these drives have 8MB of cache like their retail siblings. I could be wrong, but I don't think I am.

It looks like a different drive (probably, HLDS<LG> GCC-4480B) with 2mb buffer.
I looked at the part reference section at Dell and the only DVD/VCR Combo at 48x is HLDS GCC-4480B
with only 2mb cache.

SamSung DVD/VCR Combo with 8mb cache (Manufacturer Part# SM-348BRAS
Dell Part# A0081138)? Samsung one is selling at 77.95. But, it looks like not a black one (horrible color match).

I am wondering which one is right for me in terms of performance and noise. The difference in buffer
affect on just writing reliability? or somewhere else (like speed, or noise)?
Can anyone compare the two
drives? I've looked at a good CDRlabs review on Samsung one, but not LG (HLDS), yet.
