Aww man, I'm torn between the G3 and the F717... or if I should wait for the 8 megapixel CCDs (before Christmas) to come out and see what the price drops are then. Damn damn damn. I would really like to pick up photography over the summer, especially some outdoor shots.

Sony is going to release their 8mp before end of summer, supposedly. Have you checked out the v1 yet? or the G5?

This deal has me looking at camera's really hard.

8mp??????

So paying a ton on a 5mp that is obsolete in 3 months suddenly seems less appealing.

F717 has a lot of neat features, went and played with it at best buys and there is no WAY I hauling that tank around.

V1 looks great but seeing mixed reviews. Unique features like nite time/infrared shots, holographic/laser fast focus. and so on but some of the reviewers think the colors are kinda blah. STILL held that thing in my hands and it just feels right. Very nice camera.

Talked myself "up" to the Nikon 5700 but with the pace of the technology sinking 1K into a boat anchor like that is looking less and less appealing.

Played with the S50 (pitched as a G5 jr) which I thought I would love. I did not like it. Took FOREVER to snap off a quick shot. Thought the AF was suposed to be quick on that thing?

Some of the 10x optical zoom olympus cameras are sweet. I would think a 4mp with a 10x zoom would be tons better than 5mp with a 3x zoom for some aplications.

Right now I just want to upgrade my antique kodak DC340 2MP camera. (or is it 320). Main iritations with that camera is shuter lag and take 3 picutres wait a minute. Think I might go cheap and settle on the Minolta Dimage 300. Nice little camera with good reviews. $499 - 74 - 63 == 362 plus tax for a 5 megapixe pocket camera with manual focus? Wow. Don't see how I can go wrong.
I could get the 4 megapixel Powershot S400 for the same price. My wife has the S100 and love it but the S400 felt a LOT cheaper. What is happening to canon these days?

Dang the more I read about digital cameras the more confused I get. I'll think I will love something based on reviews and got to the store and it is a POS.

Anyone know what the definitive best 3 to 5 megapixel deal/value is with the dual 15% coupons at dell right now? Let me know (PM me don't tell these guys don't want it doing an other G5). JK you can let these guys know to if you have the magic $500+ answer

trikster2, now that 4 hours has passed and reading reviews here and there online among other stuff, I still haven't come to a decision. It seems that the more information I garner about digital camera's, the less clear the answer becomes. Like you said, choosing a "latest" camera now seems to be a mistake since in three or four months 8 megapixel cameras with no doubtly better everything from optics and electronics will come out to replace them. Of course, this change in technology always happens but such a large jump from 5 to 8 in their upper models would make buying the current one now a wrong step.

I've decided to go the cheaper and smaller route as well since lugging small bricks isn't really viable. I haven't been able to play around with any of the cameras and have been only reading input from owners and reviewers based on a camera at a time. It's nice to hear a comparison of models from someone on AT though. The Canon S400 was the one I was thinking about. You said that it feels "cheap". Perhaps it is due to the change in materials from metal to Cerabrite/ceramic? Or is it further than that? The Minolta F300 you pointed out is interesting as well although I haven't heard much about it on AT. An underpraised winner?

Well, so far I'm thinking about either the S400/S45/S50 or Minolta F300. 4 hours more till buy time!

Yes that is exactly it, the change in materials. Did not know it was ceramic thought it was plastic. Probably lighter? My wife's S100 feels so solid I could kills someone with it. THe S400 felt like it would just shatter when I whop them on the head.

Gosh why am I so violent tonight?

THe best reviews I have found are at dcresource

dcresource s50 review

Main complaint with minolta is no AF light which means slow or bad AF in low-light.

Has a cool focus follow mode though where it "locks" on to a subject. Could be good for kids or cats running around.

He likes the S50 and S45. Seems to almost prefer the S45 since cheaper, exact same features and only one less megapixel.

I generally avoid small lense cameras, but the s-series is a nice group of cameras. s45 & s50 leading that group. If you are thinking about spending the money on an s400 or s50, get the G2 or G3, or sony's 707 or 717. Both with canon and sony, the G2/707 is almost identical to the later G3/717, yet they are cheaper. My advice, buy a G2 or 707...though, neither of which you can find at dell.

Price change on that monitor (PL201M)! It's now $806.65 minus the 15% which brings it to $685.65 plus tax. Man I want this so bad. The best I can do is get it to $684.04 shipped (tax included in that price already)! Thats minus the 15% there giving, but including my 20% code instead(its not stackable).

Well I used to feel the same way back in da day. Only my SLR was "good enough" everything else a toy.

Then as I got older I realized that the cheap point and shoot I have with me in my pocket takes a LOT better pictures than the monster super duper camera sitting back in the closet at home.

90% of our pictures right now come from my wife's Canon S100, simply because it is the camera we have with us most of the time.

The S50 is almost too large for me, but I'm trying to convince myself if I wear baggy pants I can still fit it in my pocket.....

Is that a canon S50 or are you happy to see me?

the prices on dell in the sb s&p section is the prices are reduced 15% from yesterday. like the TDK dual format burner that was $299 yesterday, is now $254, a price change. then the 15% off anything s&p applies, brininging it down to $233. if you have a 10/15 % coupon thats stackable, then itll be even lower, and with free shipping and the $20 MIR for it, makes it an even better deal. but yeah, technically it *can* be 45% off from the original prices that were offered yesterday.
