A very tempting alternative to my building a Duron 1000 K7s5a system . Open the box and go.

Tyronne, when I use the Linky, I get a web page saying $449 (after the MIR, I assume).

Suggest updating the title's $463?

I gotta give you guys the lowdown on these Dells... I just got a refurb Dell 4300s 1.6 machine. Here goes:

the good:
P4 1.6GHz socket 478 Willemette
256MB PC133 (one DIMM) (one open slot left)
40 GB HDD Maxtor 7200 RPM (6L040J2)
24x CDRW (NEC NR-7900A)
CNet PRO200WL PCI Fase Ethernet Adapter
USB Ports 2 back, 2 front (also front headphone jack) (BTW, has KB/Mouse PS2 ports, too)
3.5" floppy
quiet, black keyboard, black, corded, non-optical wheelmouse
Dell support
$530 price
Windows XP Home
super quiet, and everything works great, and even kinda looks cool
Ordered around 5 am, shipped that evening!

the Bad:
no more room for drives of any size
one empty PCI slot left (2 total, one occupied by NIC)
one serial port (occupied by UPS-- good thing the PDA has a USB cradle)
AGP slot is Half height(?) --cannot close the case with a radeon 8500. If you want to change the stock ATI 16MB card, you have to have a card that's about half the height of a normal card, and also, the metal plate that seals the case and has the trapezoid hole for the VGA port is about half the length of a normal card's, too. I removed the end plate from an old GeForce 2MX I have and rely on Dell's retaining clip on the AGP port to hold the card in. Seems to work fine.
2-channel sound on Dell/Intel Mobo

the Ugly:
comes with 6 mo. AOL
MS Works 2002 (oh well, what do you expect for so cheap?)
Roxio EZCD Creator, and other assorted crap (I prefer Nero, and different assorted crap!)
$95 for ground shipping (cheapest option)
6 Ms. Norton antivirus-- what's up with that?!?

the rest:
No crappy speakers
No crappy monitor

There wasn't a photo of the case when I bought it-- I figured it would be close to the 4300. Totally wrong. The case is desktop style, with a stand that screws on the left end so you can stand it on end. There's no wasted space in the interior, and airflow is like a work of art. However, there's practically no room for upgrades. I got what I needed: a decent machine for my wife, for a low cost, but nothing more. I guess it seems like a barebones pc, fleshed out, but no fun.

I spose it was worth it... Let me know if anyone has any questions. If you're really interested, PM me and I can email you photos.

4300"S", what S stands for? slim? jus like some gateway pc I am using now(p200). What I can figure out is the new system is around $500 and how did you get a refur one? if you can use a $75 off coupon with this 449+tax system, pretty sweat, no shipping right now.
I can not get 5% extra saving mentioned at the page, who got?

I suppose the "s" stands for small form factor, or whatever... As far as my machine goes, I just configured a new model with the same basic specs for $789 (before shipping, etc), and also, something to consider is that I've had mine for a few weeks, and certainly a 1.6 machine is gonna depreciate fast. Still, I can't say it's been a bad deal. Hell-- $530 for a $789 machine still sounds like a bargain. As far as the refurb business goes, Dell claims that they totally reassemble each pc to give it another quality control check. Mine came spotless, except that the previous owner had written in the owner's referrence guide. Like I care about that!

I am about to jump on this deal. A few questions...

can the cd-rom be replaced? I have a plextor cdrw I want to put in.

does it use standard sdram?

and lastly ... how much better is the 32mb video card compared to the 16mb one?

thanks

ps. my computer just died so I think i will get this one and part out my old one.

Olouie,
There is no spare bay for anything. If you wanna put your CDRW driver on, just take the CDROM off.

I wouldn't buy a Dell Dimension 4300s simply because I don't like the case. Instead I would buy a refurbished Dell Dimension 4300 from Delloutlet.com. Bought my wife a nice 4300 for $524 last month, reasonably loaded P4 1.4, 128MB RAM, 20GB HD, Win XP Home, 56k modem, SB Live, 16x CD-RW, etc.

I don't have 5% discount either in the cart. Another thing is if you look carefully about the rebate info, it excludes 1.4G processor. Must choose at least 1.6G so $90 more.

Bought 4300S last month, upgraded to IBM hard disk, ZIPCD CDRW and 512MB RAM, so far so good.

Good: Good performance, SUPER quiet.

Bad: Low profile AGP slot is killer, no game port, only one spot for hard drive and CD-ROM

Solution: get Creative Lab Exidigy, USB 2.0 or firewire card for expansion.

olouie--

CDRom can be replaced, one for one swap only. If you wanna watch DVDs, and burn cds, you need to have a combo dvd/cdrw. But I suppose you could search for one with an inexpensive cdrom to replace.

The RAM appears to be standard. Haven't swapped it out to to check. Anyways, 256MB is enough for the primary user here.

As far as the video goes, there's quite a difference in American McGee's Alice. It ran fine in 640x480x32 with the original ATI 16MB Rage card, and was a bit choppy at higher resolutions. The GeForce 2mx I put in is no barn burner, but I can run Alice at 800x600x32 nice and smooth now.

I wouldn't get this as a base pc for a gaming rig. If you wanna add a lot of hardware, this is not for you. If you have a monitor + speakers you like, and don't need room to grow, and don't FPS game, then this is a decent deal, IMHO.

Try not to laugh at my first attempt at using html.

Looks nice. If I could find my digicam and knew HTML I'd probably do the same for my Dell Dimensions 4100 and 4300 but alas I'm a lazy ass

netscape still comes with a free graphical html editor. not anything advanced or anything, but it works. has ms stopped giving out frontpage express with everything?

oh, and on every dell i've ever seen (quite a few) the ram is standard, the ata ports are standard, damn near everything is standard. except the power supply plug and the floppy connector. i have no idea why the floppies have a pin blocked off.
