Just wondering if this is a good deal looking at getting a 1400sc and looks to me like an allright deal, but noone else replied so I thought I could be wrong, seeing as how I've never bought/built a server. Also can you just drop any piii 1.4(which I couldn't find anyway) in there, or are they different than retail ones.
Thanks for any input.

Well, they're not really "loaded". 18GB of SCSI storage is hardly adaqute for most types of file or web servers, so not sure what you'd want with it. An additional 18 gig SCSI will run you around $300, another 128 MB ram should be slapped in too. THe server will be well over $1000 when done.

Well I looked at another 18gb 10k scsi drive from dell and it was only $150, and It comes with a single channel RAID card which seems like a big plus, THanks for the input so far, 18gb would be enough for now, but in a few months I figure I could just get another 18gb drive and stripe 'em. And ram from mushkin was 100 for 256mb stick, Still not sure whether to get it or to wait out and see if other deals come along, the free RAID card kinda makes me want to jump in now

The 1400sc is a nice entry level server, i have one at home(deal they ran 1 month ago-see below). The cpu used in this series "currently" is this one: Pentium(R) III Processor Tualatin 1.13-1.4GHz (Socket 370) w/512K Cache Server (googlegear site is kinda slow) They are "SPECIAL" cpu's, so expect to pay more than your average desktop cpu.

The 1400sc server uses registered-ECC PC133 ram. **This mainboard allows you to install RAM 1 stick at a time, they don't require the RAM to be installed in pairs like the DELL 2500 series mainboard does -that uses the same cpu's.

Deal i landed last month 1400sc:
1400sc
1.26 cpu (free upgrade from the 1.13)
36G 10,000rpm SCSI (free double your drive from 18G)
CD/Floppy/128MB RAM
$673.00 -$100 rebate or double your RAM ( i picked the rebate)
total: $573.00

Get the heatsink and VRM through DELL parts and save a few dollars upgrading to a dual setup.
If you want to know anything more about this server, drop me a note i'll do my best to answer.

Cool thanks for the input, Do ya think that the RAID card is worth it? or would scsi be plenty fine on its own. I'd most likely not need it now, but later down I might decide to RAID. I wish I could of gotten in on the deal you got, but just decided to start looking for one the other day.

And you must buy those extras from Dell because? Dell's accesories/upgrades are always overpriced...

The RAID card is a great addition IF you use it. SCSI RAID is sweet... Doubt i'd use it for home use though, i upgrade my storage drives too often. Buying 3-5 SCSI drives every 6-12months would be too much $$$ for me.

My server has 36G SCSI for OS/boot on SCSI channel-1, 20/40 DDS4 tape drive on SCSI channel-2, then i use a promise IDE- pci card for my (2)-120G IDE mirror. The chipset on this mainboard is really nice for server duties, just runs and runs.

IMHO, its useless. You only get 5% off with normal pricing. I cant bank the 5% plus the 20% off promo running on whatever.

PsychoAndy and PAB,

why don't you guys try the 5% off before you make such statement? Sometimes it is stackable w/ regular promotions, and for instance, you can save additional 5% on top of this deal w/ Amex gold business card!

I was looking at that also, but decided I'd rather have scsi and I believe the p3 with 512k cache would be better in a server enviroment than the p4. but feel free to correct me I'f I'm wrong. Also Anyone know what brand/model the 1400sc comes with? And lastly what the differencr between a single channel RAID card and multiple channels. does single just mean you can have one cable coming off, and all the Raid drives go off the one cable? Thanksagain for the info

Brand Model? Did you mean what cpus are used in 1400sc? I linked to the 1.26 cpu at googlegear....(see above)

The 1400sc server has alot more flexabilty than a single P4 server has. (very cool running p3 -512k chips, SCSI Raid, SMP capable, nice case)

Channels determine how many devices/drives you can run and where they are located. If you only had 1 channel you have a choice all drives inside the case or all outside-(external Raid tower). With 2 channels you can have your internal Raid drives, and 1 external Raid tower attached. Or you could use 1 channel for the upper drive cage/bay, and the 2nd channel for the lower drive cage/bay. The more channels you have the more choices for expansion you have-the more drives you can use. 3-channel, 4-channel, it can get crazy.
