For all of us unlucky people out there who still run on measly USB 1.1 interface, heres a decent upgrade! This card is based on Texas Instruments trusted quality. Shipping I know isnt that attractive, but look around on the site (Mad cheap prices) shop a little more, and get more bang for your buck!

This was discussed a while back here, but the price has since dropped, so this is a nice reminder. I just bought this card, and it should arrive tomorrow, so I'll post if it turns out badly for any reason. Shipping is $7.50, which makes the card just over $11.00. Not too bad, IMHO.

Claimed only run at S100 speeds?! That's a crap, man! S100 = 100Mb/s, while the nowaday standard is S400 = 400Mb/s. No wonder it's this cheap.

Only one 4 pin port?! That's double crap! You may have to grasp another 4/6 cable if you want to use it with equipments other than 4 pin camcorder, like external enclouse.

Sold hundreds of bucks years ago?! I bought my pc thousand of $ 4 years ago, now I'm afraid no one would accept it even if I give it away.

Conclusion:
The worst crappy card you can ever and easily find. Sorry guys.

I was trying to find a good deal for a decent firewire card and was almost checking out when I read twice of the descpriton at their website. Based on the reason given above, it's not HOT, stone cold instead.

What's the story of you then? Did you buy it and regret now, or you are the man who sell this crap?

I think this chipset was one of the first to come out. I got a card with the same TI about two years ago and had hardly any problems, but like all technology, newer and better does come out.

From the research I did while looking for a digital camcorder for my parents, I believe there are two standards as Flowerpicker said - S100 = 100Mb/s and S400 = 400Mb/s. There are older cards and cables that will only support the older speed. It might be this cheap because it's only a S100 card, but if you're lucky it might be the cable limiting it (you'd still have to get a new cable in that case, though).

I believe S100 vs S400 is chipset dependent. A crapy cable may limit you to S100 with an S400 capable controller but not the other way around.

On the other hand, depending on what you plan on running with this card, it's an OK deal. Works just fine with camcorders for example.

Um, 100mb/s is still pretty damn fast compared to 11mb/s with USB 1.1. Heck, most people won't even have harddrives that can handle sustained 100mb/s transfer rates. So stop trying to ruin this for people who don't really need 400mb/s.

Actually if you do the math (Megabit vs. Megabyte):
100 megabits/sec = 12.5 megabytes/sec
I think sustained transfer rates for current drives are hitting higher than that (I could maybe wrong though). It's confusing when firewire cards are rated at one standard and harddisks at another. Still is a good price for a basic card to hook up a external cdwriter or harddisk for backups.
