Yes, they were. And don't be so smug, you'd be paranoid too if you stumbled across these monsters. I unwrapped one of the caps and found the declaration of independence.

I put mine in line with my car's amp. Now my lights don't dim when I play my 50-cent CD. I'm telling you, Dell is all about value these days.

Too bad the treasury the map on it points to is gone.

do not buy this. I returned 2 of them. I had lots of issues with locking up blue screens and 100% cpu useage for no reason. Dell was no help. The 2nd one I retuend locked up out of the box after 5 minnutes. I even reformated with XP pro with the sane results

PS: I kept the monitor.

Aha, but isn't the system a Dell?

Which means a year or so down the road you will have to replace the hard drive.

Dell sucks, but their monitors kick ASS. Personally, I would buy this system if I needed a new one.

They have only had this problem for about a year - ever since they switched from the commonly available drives that everyone else uses to their own brand. They also started using the "death cap chip" on their crappy proprietary MBs. The chip is preprogrammed based on which warranty you buy, and sends a burst from a 1 farad cap to all the components after that warranty is expired.

Proprietary motherboards? Funny, my 9150 came the other day and it had an Intel motherboard. =]

i think the 9150s might have a weird varient of a d945gcz mBTX board. gateway does the same thing.

i have used the 9150 and that thing is super quiet. and i have a btx machine as well that i built on my own.

also be aware that i think these are 820 systems not 920s. dell apparently ran out of 920 systems ... too much demand.

or not. they probably have a boatload of 820 they need to unload first. the 920 have 2M cache each core, gonna cost a lot more than the 820s

are you saying if i forward my clock on my dell past warranty exp. date, the system will halt and crash? i find this extremely hard to belive, do you have solid physical proof - link ?

what you are saying is dell is intentionally burning out pc's to get service calls to replace the mb--

1. why would they do this?
2. what happens if someone calls to extend the warranty before expiration date? how would they reprogram the death count ?
3. is gateway, hp, packard bell, acer also doing this ?
4. what about mb manuf like abit, gigabye, asus - wouldnt they do this also to get you to buy a new mb every year?

Tested: dell gx260, dell e310 and dell Inspiron 6000
Operation set 3 dell pc clocks to 2015, reset them at least 6 times, let then run for almost 3 hours with clock set ahead, went online and did some other tests as well.
Results: no pc's crashed or stopped working at all, dont see a problem - proof of this is needed by poster.

MY TEST
i'm going to set my system date to 2015 on several dell pc's we have at work, reboot them a few times and see if they stop working, will report back later today.

MY RESULTS
coming soon.....

What are you crazy!!! When all the computers at work blow up, they are going to blame you.
I am looking into the future and ActiveX's next thread is titled "I got fired from work for setting the date ahead on the dell computers" Subtitle "OMGWTF-BOOM!!!!!!11111":Q

Well, you are not the only person in the thread and there are OBVIOUSLY people in here that took him seriously. So I retract my statement "You guys" and will change it to "Some of you guys."

They hid mine in my DVD drive.

Funny you mention that. The DVD-RW on my Dimension 8400 died while trying to install Windows XP. =] Fortunately, the drive will be replaced under warranty after two chat sessions with India. The 3 yr warranty is starting to pay off already! 1x 250GB SATA drive replaced, 1x DVD-RW drive replaced, and I've still got 2 yrs left.

Answers:

1. Follow the money.

2. I tried this, thinking I outsmarted them. Then, all of a sudden I heard the modem making noises, and I hadn't used the thing for years (I have DSL). I then checked the cap countdown, it had been extended exactly 1 year. Coincidence? I think not.

3. Gateway, HP, PB and Acer have switched to a less obvious and much more efficient technique - use parts that NEVER last more than a year (forward thinking).

4. ABIT? You're kidding! See No. 1. And, read about the capacitor/motherboard fiasco of their own, its all here in black and white. Trust no one.
