Yes, they were. And don't be so smug, you'd be paranoid too if you stumbled across these monsters. I unwrapped one of the caps and found the declaration of independence.

Aha, but isn't the system a Dell?
Which means a year or so down the road you will have to replace the hard drive.
Dell sucks, but their monitors kick ASS. Personally, I would buy this system if I needed a new one.
They have only had this problem for about a year - ever since they switched from the commonly available drives that everyone else uses to their own brand. They also started using the "death cap chip" on their crappy proprietary MBs. The chip is preprogrammed based on which warranty you buy, and sends a burst from a 1 farad cap to all the components after that warranty is expired.
Proprietary motherboards? Funny, my 9150 came the other day and it had an Intel motherboard. =]

do not buy this. I returned 2 of them. I even reformated with XP pro with the sane results
are you saying if i forward my clock on my dell past warranty exp. date, the system will halt and crash? i find this extremely hard to belive, do you have solid physical proof - link ?They also started using the "death cap chip" on their crappy proprietary MBs. what you are saying is dell is intentionally burning out pc's to get service calls to replace the mb--
1. why would they do this?
2. what happens if someone calls to extend the warranty before expiration date? how would they reprogram the death count ?
3. is gateway, hp, packard bell, acer also doing this ?
4. what about mb manuf like abit, gigabye, asus - wouldnt they do this also to get you to buy a new mb every year?
MY TEST
i'm going to set my system date to 2015 on several dell pc's we have at work, reboot them a few times and see if they stop working, will report back later today.
MY RESULTS
coming soon.....
Uh oh, don't say NSA Lummox did not warn you...Originally posted by: lightpants

What are you crazy!!! When all the computers at work blow up, they are going to blame you.
I am looking into the future and ActiveX's next thread is titled "I got fired from work for setting the date ahead on the dell computers" Subtitle "OMGWTF-BOOM!!!!!!11111":Q

There's a BIG difference between being gullible and being sarcastic.
Being gullible would mean we actually believe what Greg04 said about the capacitors. (hardly)
Being sarcastic means mocking Greg04 for actually believing what he said. (one of my favorite pastimes)

Tested: dell gx260, dell e310 and dell Inspiron 6000
Operation set 3 dell pc clocks to 2015, reset them at least 6 times, let then run for almost 3 hours with clock set ahead, went online and did some other tests as well.
Results: no pc's crashed or stopped working at all, dont see a problem - proof of this is needed by poster.
