I'm kinda shocked to not see any posts on this. Doesn't the monitor go for 700-800 during promos? That means $400 for a decent dual-core system...

Aha, but isn't the system a Dell?

Which means a year or so down the road you will have to replace the hard drive.

Dell sucks, but their monitors kick ASS. Personally, I would buy this system if I needed a new one.

some are waiting for this system for $800 or so. i would up the warranty to 2 yrs, prob worth it the long run. most of the dell business deals come with xp home, 512 megs of ram, 48x cd-reader, kinda lame though.

They have only had this problem for about a year - ever since they switched from the commonly available drives that everyone else uses to their own brand. They also started using the "death cap chip" on their crappy proprietary MBs. The chip is preprogrammed based on which warranty you buy, and sends a burst from a 1 farad cap to all the components after that warranty is expired.

um, can someone help guide me with this coupon. i tried to add it but everything on dell home already has a 20% off discount; preventing me from adding it. i talked to idibackmanalaviashunic nahasapeemapetilan aka 'Jeff' at Dell sales today to find out why they offer a coupon that seems impossible to add and he had no reasonable explanation. also, when i went to try this again the 2405 wasn't available as a monitor option. i really want to order this but i needz teh helpsauce

If I am reading this correctly, you are saying that Dell sabotages customers' systems after their warranty expires? You got a link for that?

Their customer support sucks very badly. Big time. Really-really bad. You probably can't even imagine how bad if you have not dealt with them on multiple occasions. But I would love to see a link that substantiates your claim.

I do have a link though:
In practical terms, the farad (f) represents a extremely large amount of capacitance. Real-world circuits require capacitance values very much smaller. Therefore, we use microfarads (f) and picofarads (pf) to represent practical capacitance values.

Lol, I'd love to see a 1F capacitor stuffed into a Dell computer case. That would be interesting in itself.

the sabotage... that is plain wrong if it is true
but i doubt it is true. what happens to people when they buy a 1 year warranty and decides to extend it? how would dell handle those if this is being practived?

conspiracy theory much? Dell is not that stupid... if they actually do this there would be HUGE lawsuits involved

Heh. I agree! If they did that, I'd buy one and run the system clock forward a few years just to make it explode. Not to mention the fact that Dell cases are generally so closely packed together that a 1F capacitor wouldn't even fit anywhere in the system.

I have to admit, I've heard some funny stuff about poor Dell tech support, but this is the first time I've ever heard of a "black helicopters" conspiracy theory about Dell computers.

There's a BIG difference between being gullible and being sarcastic.

Being gullible would mean we actually believe what Greg04 said about the capacitors. (hardly)

Being sarcastic means mocking Greg04 for actually believing what he said. (one of my favorite pastimes)

Proprietary motherboards? Funny, my 9150 came the other day and it had an Intel motherboard. =]

I have a 9100 with this proc and it's been great. No problems so far, but then again I almost electrocuted myself getting that stupid cap off the board, and of course the "Dell - O - Tronic" hard drive went straight to eBay.

Can you post step-by-step instructions? I had hard time sleeping last night knowing that my system's life is in danger.

Oh don't you believe it, I removed a pair of capacitors from my old Dimension, a day and a half before burst day. Another trick is to remove the BIOS battery. But you didn't hear it from me.

So you found two of THESE in your dell box?

You may not be able to tell in the picture, so here are the dimensions: 76mm diameter, 245mm high (about 10 inches tall).

And format the hard drive to remove any spyware that huge capacitor might have planted. But I did not recommend it.

I hope Dell is not reding this, or they'll come up with a new trick.
