They pulled the $200 rebate and the 24" LCD. Now THAT was a good deal.

A friend of mine wants me to find him a deal on a high end home computer
for his kid. His philosophy is buy the best machine available every 4-8 years. I don't know much about the different Dell line
and am asking your help if this machine listed by OP is comparable to what
he wants. I am need help and would value your input.

Here are his key specs of his dream machine:
XPS600
256 PCI Express x16 GeForce6800
1GB Ram
250GB
Dual Drives DVDRW and DVDROM
FLoppy Drive and Media Reader
19" Flat Panel
Sound Blaster
Speakers
Keyboard

Again, this machine is to make sure that his 10 year old kid can run all the games he wants
without having to replace the machine anytime soon.

Is the e510 Dual core comparable?
What is the difference between e510 and XPS600?

Thanks for your help.....

If your looking at high end pc then I would personally never go to Dell, just a waste of time IMO.
Your much better off going with someone like MainGear, Puget Systems, Overdrive PC.

That video card is already two generations out of date. There is no way it will last much more then 2 years let alone 4 at the current rate of gaming graphics increases. Heck even the current top of the line cards can't play F.E.A.R. at 1024x768 with all the bells-and-whistles effects (let alone include anti-aliasing or ansiotropic filtering) turned on without hitting sections that pull the card down to 0-2 frames per second...

Good Lord, talk about a waste of money. If a person isn't capable of building their own system for a fraction of the cost of those brands, then they are probably better off with a Dell.

Holy crap yeah. I just took a look at MainGear and they want $99 extra to use a Zalman CNPS9500 over the stock heatsink!!! The part itself can be had for $60, and there is no extra labor involved, since the SAME labor would occur installing the stock heatsink.

They also want $699 for a 7900GTX, when they can be found for $520-550....

You are comparing a $500 platform with a $1500 platform. That's like thinking about a $30K SUV and settling for a Hyunday Accent. If he can sink $1500 into a PC, he sure does not need an E510. If he is unwilling/unable to pay for the XPS600, an XPS400 (when on sale) would be a better option.

XPS600 is a more powerful platform and has more powerful CPUs and video cards as options. It has more room for expansion in the future, including the SLI capability.

Other than gaming, E510 would be a plentiful PC for the kid when configured as mentioned above. Dell does not offer a 6800 on it, but it can be added as a DIY.

I really don't see a PC anywhere that can last 8 years (other than as a grandma's toward the end of its life), but a nicely configured E510 will get him through most of the 4 years.

I'm looking to find my mother a computer, she doesn't do any gaming so the graphics card isn't an issue.

I'm not all that familiar with media center PCs, if I throw a fresh install of XP Pro on there instead of Media Center PC as the OS, can this computer be used as a normal (non-media center) PC?

You don't even need to bother with that. You don't have to use MCE features if you do not want to. The main visual difference between MCE and XP Pro is the "10-foot interface" that can be controlled by an (optional) remote. It is launched by clicking on its icon on the desktop. If you don't need it, just don't click it.

As far as I know, for all practical purposes MCE is XP Pro plus the media center add-ons. The only feature lacking is the ability to be a domain-name controller or something like that. You mother will most likely not need it.
