What kind of temps are you getting and with which HSF?

Here is my basic system:

DFI LANParty UT nF4 Ultra-D (N4D623-3 BIOS)
Opteron 165 Dual Core Toledo(CCBWE) Rev JH9-E6 (9 hours Prime stable @ 300 x 9)
Zalman CNPS-9500 CPU cooler and ZM-NB47J Chipset Cooler
Geil ONE Series - PC3200-TCCD (2 x 512) 2,2,2,5
eVGA GeForce 6800 GS - 256MB
Maxtor 6L200S0 - 200Gig, 16MB cache, SATA150 HD
OCZ Modstream 520
Thermaltake Tsunami Dream (black, w/ window)
Thermaltake Hardcano 12 Fan Controller
Hyundai ImageQuest L90D+

That's all the info I copied down from my CPU before clamping down the Zalman.

Average full-load temps during the 9hour dual Priming session were in the low 50s. Part of the problem is that my system is located over a baseboard radiator, so case temps can be several degrees above the ambient temperature. Temps were much lower in the fall before I turned on the heat.

The next frontier for me is custom fabbed modular cables to solve some of the problems I see with the Modstream cables. Then I finally need to get serious about the noise. This box has been torn apart several times, and I was pretty impatient when I put it back together last time. Right now I have six fans, but only four on the controller. I have some obvious fixes, but I just don't want to open the box up again right away.

I finally got my Opty all set up. It's a week 47 also and right now it's running at 300x9 set at 1.375v in BIOS (reported as 1.35v in BIOS and 1.33v on MBM5). Priming will commence as soon as I post this.

All 0546 and 0547s seem to be better than most of the earlier ones. I have a 0546 that I got from Monarch right before Christmas, and it does 2.7 at 1.425, though CPUZ shows 1.4. Most get that, and I am confident that I will get 3.0, though I won't leave it there, since it will take upwards of 1.5v. It's amazing to almost be guaranteed a 300x9 out of the box.

Can you get a combo without them putting it together so that you just get a better price?

I ordered the 165 along with the DFI NForce4 Ultra-D and a few other things. If you drop the 90 day combo warranty to 30, there's no extra charge for the combo other than the cost of the parts. I guess you can contact them to see if they can cut the price further by not putting it together for you.

I would just rather get unopened boxes. I am paranoid! How do I know if they are not sending me returns if they send me open boxes?

If you order a retail CPU it won't be tested. But I guess that doesn't answer your question.

When I bought it, the differential was about $125. THis machine is just a toy for me, and there are limits to what I will spend on toys. The 1.5G P4 it replaces did everything I needed to do.

Just got the package today. Took off the heatsink and it's:

OSA165DAA6CD
CCBWE 0547TPMW
137575AL50185

I guess there's no way to be 100% certain it wasn't an open box motherboard but everything was packed back in the original box, all the cable packages are still sealed, no dust on the motherboard and no scratches on the screw mount grounds. The only goof was they installed the ram sticks in a single channel configuration instead of dual; I guess the color coded slots wasn't good enough The combo package also came with some freebies: download of Half Life 2, 128MB SD card w/USB adapter (looks like they're now out), pen, Lance Armstrong wrist band and 1yr sub to Maxumum PC.

kamranziadar, How about editing your title to reflect the present prices? This thread is still pretty active and and I keep looking to see if the price is back at $270

I am using the stock hs/fan that came with it, its very quiet and got heatpipes. I am using it with the asrock 939dual, which is not an overclocker friendly board, if I use a more overclocker friendly board, I bet I can overclock this chip even more. good luck!

The ASRock is actually a fairly decent overclocking board with newer/modded BIOSes...

Apparently there is a software cap on the HTT in some versions of the BIOS! (dunno if it's intentional)

I have the ASrock Dual SATA2 board in a second system. It is a great board at stock voltages, but gives you virtually nothing if you wish to change voltages. I'd say its a great board for the price, and a good OCer at stock volts. If you have memory that needs juice or want to get the most out of your CPU OC then this board is not for you. Got 2.4 GHz on a A64 3000+ Venice at 1.45v which is as far as the board will go.

It looks like Monarch really caught on now. The OEM 165 is $340 and is sold out until the 30th. All of us that got them at $270 are lucky.

Edit: When the thread refreshed I just noticed at the top of the page that the price has been set for awhile. NM.

I got an OEM Opteron from NewEgg recently that had obviously been used (scratches and nicks on the case). I complained, they looked into it, and then they went way out of their way to make me happy. In other words, yes you can get a returned cpu if you order an OEM one.

Zim, it is not just OEM CPUs. I have received retail CPUs with marks on the heatspreader.
It is often from the testing they run before packaging the CPU.

ordered a oem 165 and a DFI Infinity board sunday and it shipped today. I should have it on thursday. 271 for the CPU and 85 for the board not a bad deal at all.

I just got my opteron 165/DFI ultra-d combo and they already stuck the thermaltake venus 8 heatsink on the cpu..can't see the cpu date code. Anyone know if there's an easy way to remove the heatsink so I can see the code? I tried unclipping the heatsink, but it seems to be stuck on there fairly tight...

I hate posting this question here in the hot forums, but I was just wondering how the current retail newegg processors are doing. I ordered one and have yet to receive it. Has anyone here bought one from there and found it's limit? Or is everyone getting theirs from monarch?
