Do other DVD burners come with any kind of decoder? Since it's being sold in the USA, and since some of them are considered illegal here why would you expect to get one with a burner.

"I think when he said decoder, he means movie player software like PowerDVD or WinDVD which allow playback but not ripping. Alot of regular dvdrom drives include some kinda player software in the box."
Well that's one way they can keep the price down. I highly recommend PowerDVD if you need a player for your computer.

"Man I wish the HD-burn wasn't so buggy on this drive. It's the only thing keeping me from buying this over the pioneer 106. It beats the pioneer in a majority of the speed tests but isn't proven like the pioneer drives. Desicions, decisions."
After much burning using HD-BURN I would say that this drive is not buggy in regards to HD-BURN, it is picky about the media used for that purpose. Some cheap Taiwanese discs simply don't work for HD-BURN. I have had no problems whatsoever with Fuji branded Taiyo Yuden discs and HD-BURN. To date I have had two coasters with this burner. One was creating an HD-BURN disc while I was actively surfing the net, so it was pretty much my fault, and another when the power went out while I was burning a DVD. So if you don't want the best you can get at the moment, don't buy this drive. BTW I have burned over 3 dozen HD-BURN discs so far with the one failure that I mentioned. I would have burned more but I am so lazy that I keep buying more hard drives to have more disk space. But HD-BURN is a great and inexpensive way to archive data, in my case live music.
