Well I just got mine. Neither of the discs it comes with seem to have any drivers for it and I don't see any on there website. I put it in place of my old Cd-Rom and while it windows detects as a recorder its still labeled "Cd-ROM" Where the hell do I get drivers for this thing???

You probably don't need a driver specifically for the unit. If windows picks it up, and you can read CDs in windows, you are probably good. The nero software can then recognize and use it.

It's nice deal if the website works. Probably their site is down right now.

Yes, you are right that you don't need driver. Nero or whatever burning software you use has the driver included. So if you have old Nero or something, you need to update it for newer drive.CD-Rom but what capacity does it display? CD can't exceed 700MB.

I bought this drive too and won't be getting it till next week. BTW, there is a new firmware that is posted on the website link. Hopefully this helps winxp recognize your drive. Let us know how HDBurn works. I am really interested in it. Thanks.

thanks for head up noypi2000, I'll install that in just a minute. Well, even without it I did get it up and running on xp. I've tried doing a disc to disc copy of an unprotected DVD I had using the dvd+r they gave, some real cheap blank 1x dvd-r's I've had lying around that I use with my standalone Panasonic DVD recorder and some Maxell 2x DVD-r's I just bought last night. It detected the DVD+R disc and the maxell's also worked fine, but the cheap 1x dvd-r I had did not work. I'm currently trying to see how well it handles copying of a "protected" disc. I wanted to make a backup of Matrix, I used DVD decryptor to rip the movie, but what's the best app now for me to put it together and burn it on one of these maxell's?? Thanks

Ashwanb, you are welcome.
What cheap media did you use? Can you give the brand and maker. I will be using some Optodisc, Compusa and Verbatim datalifeplus dvd-r's that I recently bought. I hope it will work since I still have over 40 of these discs. I'll let you know if it works once I get my drive.

OK so I ordered one of these drives. I was sold on the HD Burn and figured it would be 6 months before anyone else was offering the same technology. And the fact that it was a multi-format drive. It was beginning to look like like Sony and others who currently had multi-format drives were not in any hurry whatsoever to come off their $300+ prices. I don't necessarily consider myself as a smart shopper buying a $200 item with no reviews or customer reports, but I guess I will find out soon enough. So thanks to the responders to some of my previous posts and hope you will excuse my lack of knowledge about Sanyo's products. I will advise to this thread as to my success and results with the drive. Although it may be some time before other DVD-RW mfg's offer Hd Burn, manufacturer's of DVD players will probably offer support pretty soon since Sanyo has said it would freely license the technology to player mfg's/ Hoping for the best.

Point taken. The fact is that Sanyo has been synonymous with junk. Let's call a spade a spade.
If you want proof look at their home DVD's that they actually put their name on. Who cares how long they have been around. They either build good products or something that falls short. ...

It's probably worth mentioning a couple of things. A company like Sanyo has many divisions, each with its own target audience. For example Sanyo manufactures lots of semiconductors and they do it very well. As a technology company, their name is often hidden from view but that doesn't make their goods and services to be of lesser quality than someone else's. Chances are that many electronic toys you own contain Sanyo parts and have worked flawlessly for years. Sanyo also makes end user consumer products that are targeted at the low end - the junk that we normally associate them with. The manufacturing, support, marketing and sales infrastructure for consumer products differs greatly from that of OEM semiconductor and assemblies. Presumably, they have their reasons for aiming at the low end (maybe it's a volume costs thing?).

Now in the context of this drive, the question to ask is whether they put forth the effort to make a good product or not - what is the target market ? what was their business plan for this drive ? I'd bet that in this space where the competition is Sony and NEC, they probably did a good job. Naturally, only time will tell. Nonetheless it's important not to get caught up on preconceived assumptions about the company. I wouldn't buy this drive only because it's a rev-1 product and so I'd rather wait for the follow-on version. But that doesn't mean this drive can't be a nice one.

yep. i love my sanyo 19" tv(my mother gave it to me for a christmas present). withstood a psychotic girlfriend who knocked it onto hardwood floor and also successive moving to thwart the break-ins of crackeheads.
plus my family has bought several(meaning more than seven) refurbs(the above tv was one of them) from the factory.
the only ones that have conked out after a few years are the 19" that my brother(who owes me $100 from two years ago, clearly irresponsible) borrowed from my sister, and my aunt's 27" which was subjected to repeated viewings of fresh prince reruns and ghost dad.
sanyo tvs are not cutting edge(haven't seen one with component vid or hd yet -- but haven't been looking hard either), but i would say they are definitely reliable

My drive just came in about 3 hours ago. I installed it, and used RecordNow DX 4.60 to record a movie. I had "The Pianist" already stripped and reduced to 4.3 gigs (DvdToolBox and InstantCopy), and I recorded this to a Ritek G03 disc. The recorder ran at 2x, no errors, result plays fine on my 3 settop players (Pioneer, Apex, and Cyberhome). Next I am going to try the one 4x DVD+R disk which came with the drive.

Note that I am ignoring the B's Recorder Gold and Sonic MyDVD which came with the drive -- really low-class software, best ignored.

If you burn it without HD burning enabled, i guess you can play it in any regular player. I dont think there's any compatibility issue with this drive

are you saying it did work in your dvd player? is the drive crap because HDburn doesnt work? Sorry I was just trying to see if you made a typo by saying it did or didnt work in your dvd player. and unsure why you would say the drive is crap. whats everyone else's take on this? are you guys also having problems with HDburn? anyone tried this with PS2 backups?
