Just set mine up about an hour ago. Of course I also made my first stupid mistake. For some reason, wth Discjuggler, the drive was showing up as 8x and tried to burn at 8x. I didn't even think to turn down the burn speed to 4x until I had a fresh new coaster on my hands.

Oh well anyway, after that stupid mistake, I made sure to turn the burner down to 2x for my Verbatim DVD+R and it worked fine the second time. I'll have to remember to check what speed Discjuggler is trying to burn my DVDs at in the future. At least until there is a 8x firmware upgrage and 8x media.

Does anybody know if it will burn HD VCDs that can be read by most dvd players. I made a VCD with my CD burner and it is read in most dvd players but it sounds like and HD CD is only read by dvd players in computers with extra firmware. If the burner can make HD VCDs, can they be one hour but better quality than a regular VCD?

Well i got it to burn a ps2dvd and a dvd, still cant get it to burn any HD burn cd with nero .35,it just starts then gives me a "Track following error" then spits out the cd, tried memorex and imatation cd's as with a 90 min cd-r, we need a hdburn expert to step up and help me out....maybe i got a bad drive, who knows so far.
Read that others have had no problems making Hd's with this drive
Also when trying to make a HDburn video its shows the video ts and audio ts folders like a dvd, so i guess you have to convert your mpg's to dvd video first? nero has NO support on HDburn..

I got my drive Friday which was pretty fast service from AccuPC and FedEX. I had ordered the drive Tuesday late and I'm in Georgia, so not bad. Had some problems at first. Installed the drive and the B's Gold software while I was running W98SE. B's Gold didn't have HD Burn lighted as an option. Was procrastinating making the move to XP, but figured I may as well go ahead. Had to flash the drive with the firmware from the Optorite site. B's Gold then did not recognize the drive until I started the software, and then promted me to restart my computer. To make a long story short, with B's Gold installed on my compuuter I would keep get yellow exclamation flags under one or more of my CD, DVD drives. I uninstalled that garbage and problems resolved. Using Nero 5.5.10.35 and all drives including the Optorite recognized. HD Burn option was available and I used it to archive 1050 MB data to one disc in 7:25 at 24X. For some reason the box to change write sppeds wasn't working and showed 28X but Nero corrected the speed to the 24X Max. It might be nice at some point to be able to choose slower speeds, but I can live with that. I restored one of the files to my hard drive as a check procedure. I should restore an entire disc to the HD and make sure the files are all OK but maybe later.
So I haven't gotten around to burning a DVD yet. I've got to free up some disc space first but you can bet I'll be getting around to it pretty soon. The great thing for me is that HD Burn works. This was the main selling point for me with this drive. I archive a lot of live music shows on quality TY discs, usually taking up to three discs per show. So now I can archive them more often than not on a single disc. I'll probably save $5 or more a week on blank discs. The cost savings will pay for the drive pretty quickly. So having a multi-format DVD burner is sauce for the goose. The drive itself seems to be OK. Optorite's packaging is pretty much no frills and the B's Gold software is pretty useless IMO, but even mfg's like Sony don't always include Nero. Hopefully others can report regarding compatible and incompatible DVD media, and their success using this drive. I took the plunge now because I figure their probably won't be any other HD BURN drives on the market for a while, and since Sanyo apparently is going to give the technology to DVD player mfg's, there should be players supporting it pretty soon.

Ok so I had one successful HD BURN and now I am getting track following errors also. I have made absolutely no changes to any settings. On the bright side I'm getting the error before any writing occurs. I may try to reinstall B's Crap again since I have my drives all working OK. It may be time to contact the mfgs for help.

Well so far ive made 3 dvd coasters in which i got a budlight sitting now, this morning i made a succesful ulead dvd and a ps2backup using Alcohol software, nero burning a .iso dvd file made a ps2 coaster.
no luck with Hdburn, just errors, maybe i'll try reflashing firmware, again, who knows, the point i hate buying from the 'net is the returns, if i bought this drive at best buy...etc i could just exchange it or get my money back, as for burning +R who cares and Hdburn is nice instead of 2-3 cd's for my movies....but then again will my apex players ever read them?

Your DVD player has to support HD BURN for it to be able to play HD Burn encoded discs.
Here's an excerpt from an article regarding HD BURN and DVD players.

"The resulting disc has to be played back on a DVD system, because of the different recording mechanism used in HD-Burn, and the firmware on the DVD player needs to be changed to be compatible with HD-Burn.

To promote HD-Burn, Sanyo is planning to disclose the technology for free to DVD hardware makers, so that they can produce HD-Burn compatible DVD players."

Link to article http://www.idg.net/english/crd_data_952324.html

I'm not even sure that Sanyo has an HD BURN supported DVD player at the moment, so until such time as their are firmware upgrades to convert existing players to support HD BURN this is pretty much only good for data discs. And hopefully I can get it to work more than once. I have contacted Optorite about the problem, but it will probably be the first of next week before I get a reply.

I know HD Burn is a nice feature and should work and all, but what about the dual DVD format for $200? And like already mentioned, the HD Burn is going to only be good for data discs ATM since nothing else is going to read them, including cdroms, dvdroms, standalone dvd players, etc. I would suggest anyone buying this solely for the HD Burn, stay away! There's obviously some bug with it, maybe with Nero or maybe with the firmware.

4x DVD writing speed, and dual format DVD writing is what I wanted. I think that is an excellent deal for $200, delivered. I haven't even tried the HDBURN. As I understand, even if it works, HDBURN discs will not be readable anywhere else. I have burned two DVD-R discs so far, both successfull.

I agree with this. I am mostly looking for the dual format DVD writing, but from previous posts it looks as though that might be finicky as well... or maybe people haven't really tried it just assuming it worked? and have just been trying HD burn? could you guys who do have the drive chime in about DVD-R and +R writing capabilities?

Nero e-mailed me today with a so called HDburn fix, basically uninstall the software and reinstall, still same error trying to HDburn, burned a few dvd-r's today no problem....nad the supplied +R worked ok to. heres the nero email
maybe it might work for you guys

Dear Customer,

Thank you for your email.

Please uninstall/install Nero 5.5.10.35 by doing the following?it may address your issues.

First make sure you have your Nero 5 serial key to install Nero/Nero Express with. It should look like 15xx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxx. It should be located on the inside of the Nero Jewel case, or on the back of the paper sleeve the Nero CD came in. You can also go into your Registry, and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and under SOFTWARE_AHEAD_NERO BURNING-ROM_INFO obtain your Nero 5 serial key from here.

Then download NeroClean Tool from ftp://ftp9.nero.com/attach/Nero-CleanTool.zip
to your desktop. Unzip the file and then double click on the EXE file to run. Select 'Clean All' option and then click on the 'Clean' button to Uninstall all Nero products. And then reboot your system. It will clean the registry and remove all Nero entries.
After that download and install the latest Nero version from our website at www.nero.com using your Nero 5 serial key to unlock from Demo mode.
Best regards
Al Valerio

Finally got a response from accestek not optorite on the problem!!

We're sorry to inform you that?F
as you know that " HD -Burn " it's a newer and higher technology in optical device
till now the Nero software still have some limits to support our
DD0203 ,such as it needs use some disc which had been verify by Nero ..........
but Nero has improvement and try solved this limitations ,
and the ready schedule will be end of this Month .

but , If we could get the codes for the CD-R media you are using, that would be
helpful. Please go into "Nero Toolkit" folder, and run the "Nero CD Speed".
insert the blank CD-R media you are having problem
with. Click on "Extra", then "Disc Info". Please copy down all the information
and email to me.

I ordered my drive on Monday and it arrived yesterday afternoon. It installed without any problems and I flashed the BIOS to the latest version and then burned a data DVD (using Nero) just to make sure the basic functions work. So far so good.

I'll have to wait until the weekend when I have some time to play with trying to burn some movies. We'll see how that goes.

Not like it was 2 months ago, the .59/ea for a 100 from rima.com was a deal, burned 2x for me and no compatability problems, closest deal is like .75/ea for a 100 purchase.
