What software would I use to with this drive to:

author a DVD?
backup a video DVD?
write a data DVD?
possibly backup PS2 or XBox?

I've heard good things about DVDX to copy. Anyone else have anything better?

HD BURN success! Thought I would relay this to those having problems with HD BURN. Many users including myself had reported getting a "track following error" attempting to use HD BURN with Nero. Well apparently the problem seems to be with the discs you are using and not necessarily with the burner or with Nero. I had been successful on my first attempt, and then repeated failures. I was trying to burn the same disc each time and apparently there was a problem with it even though it was a Taiyo Yuden. And this was the same brand disc that I was at first successful with, also a TY. So I stuck a Fuji branded Taiyo Yuden in the burner and was successful. I have burned several HD BURN discs now and even burned one with 1399.9 MB. So if you are still having problems with the HD BURN get down to your local Best Buy and pick up some Fuji's.
In regard to the performance of the burner to DVD and CD burning, it has worked flawlessly. I have burned several DVD movies on Verbatim +R discs at 2.4x and at 4x with no problem. DVDINFO revealed these are RICOH discs. Also burned a Memorex -R disc at 2x with no problem. Have burned several CD's successfully. I have not had a single coaster. I have had mixed results on which DVD players the discs would play on. I have an APEX 1201 which none of the discs would play on, another 1201 which is a actually a rebadged 1100 on which all the discs play fine. On an older Sony 7215 the discs wouldn't play and on a high priced ONKYO 800 they all played fine. What players they will work on probably has nothing to do with the Optorite burner. I wish I had been able to try the discs on a later model Sony as I am fairly certain they will play everything.
So since I have resolved the HD BURN problem with my burner I am extremely pleased with it's performance. I could have easily paid a $100 more for one that didn't even have HD BURN.

so you're saying that you had the track error during the same burning session where you got the pny cd-r to work? so is it the general consensus that HD burn is working if you use certain brands of cd-rs?

SCORE!!! me to, i burned my first HDburn cd-r!! A guy from work gave me 5 Maxell 80 min cd-r and Bam they worked, stuck the memorex back in bang...same error, i guess its just media picky..so we got PNY, Fuji, Maxell's work and i read that Kypermedia worked too
I guess i can forget about returning this drive and throw away the RMA #
I burned a HD-ISO of a 1 gig mpeg and it burns as fast at 24x as a 700 meg 48x liteion...damn it was fast!!
Plopped it in my Mintek and said no disc......i knew i wasnt that lucky..gotta play with that HD-video function next

Budman,
I didn't see an option in Nero under HD BURN for video. As far as I know it is pretty much only good for data at this point even though music comes up also, it is not supposed to work for audio discs. Hopefully DVD players will soon have HD BURN support and maybe you will be able to play longer or higher quality SVCD's and maybe even long mp3 discs. I suppose you could burn an audio CD with it and see if it will play on the Optorite since nothing else would play it.

I just happened to notice under the music tab in Nero you can choose only mp3 or WMA, so you can't actually burn a regular audio disc with HD BURN.

Bump this back up for an exceptional deal on a multi-format burner that also has HD BURN! And no frigging rebate hassle!

"With Burnproof, the 4 MB difference shouldn't matter."

Should be a non-issue here as it has been proven already that CD-RW drives with 8MB cache such as Samsung's don't necessarily outperform many of the 2MB cache drives. Technology such as Smart Burn and Burn Proof have made cache size virtually irrelevant.

If i open up new compilation in nero is see 6 different burning settings with nero .35
HDburn (iso)
HDBURN (copy)
HDburn video
Hdburn (boot)
Hdburn rom-udf
Hdburn udf-iso

Hdburn-video opens up a window with Audio_ts and video_ts folder, so it looks like you have to author a small 1.4 gig dvd file to play it in the future

I bought a mintek 1600 dvd player last night because it plays unauthored dvd-data s/vcd movies....both my apex's 1500 and 703 would recognize them...i'm a happy man lately!!

For some reason every time I open Nero now I get Nero Express and am not able to switch to the full Nero Burning Rom version. I know that you are supposed to be able to toggle back and forth between the two. Could someone please help me, I am such an idiot!

For the Nero version that came with my cdwriter there are 2 shortcuts in the start menu, one for Express, and one for regular Nero. The Express shortcut has a "/w" switch tacked on to the command line (ex: "C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero\nero.exe" /w) but is otherwise the same so I assume all you need to do it remove it. You may have a modified Nero distro so it may not be able to switch, but it's worth trying.

You shouldn't be having any problems burning with Nero whether you are using DVDXCopy or DVD2One or whatever, the problem is not with Nero. Am using 5.5.10.35 and have had zero problems.

If you have a Pioneer and a Sony maybe you should just wait around until Blue Laser DVD burners are $300 or less. It might be a little while though. I am delighted to have an HD BURN drive since I am cutting the amount of CD discs I use for archiving in half.

Heres another e-mail i recieved overnight from Mark at Accestek/Optorite......and we already realized this

Dear Chris ,
As you know the HD -Burn which has allowed conventional
CD-R media (700MB) to doubles the writing capacity (1.4GB).
that's why we need use good quality cd disc .and till now only
one disc quality is ok for this function , and list as :
Disc Type : CDR
Manufacture : Taiyo Yuden
Lead in Code : 97. 24, 01
Lead Out Code : 79:59. 72

if you really want to using HD burn this function ,
please try to use this one .

Of course we will keep enhance this Drive's performance .

best regards,
