I just received my drive yesterday and began burning some dvds today. I successfully burnt a compusa dvd-r made by lead data. I also burnt an iso image to an optodisc dvd-r but is unreadable in my dvd player. I got errors when running scandisc in cdspeed.

HD-Burn is a problem for me. I always get a 'invalid parameter in list' using Nero. It doesn't even want to start the burning process. Does anyone have the same error as mine? My drive is in a firewire enclosure. I am using Memorex cdrs. Maybe this is the problem since others have failed using this brand of cdr. I'll buy some of the brands that others had successfully burnt an HD-Burn disc.

I'll try and burn some more dvds tomorrow. I will try Verbatim datalifeplus dvd-r that I bought from Office Depot and the dvd+r that came with the drive.

Hope someone can help. Thanks.

im gettin the same thing too, whats the deal with that? were you able to use the full version before? like switch back and forth? im able to use the full version for the first start up then it removes the full version from the start up menu and just puts in nero express. weirdddd[/quote]

Exactly the same way it is happening with me. Maybe they will have it fixed in the next version.

If HD-Burn needs high quality discs then I wonder how the Verbatim DataLifePlus CD-R's work with it? They are supposed to be the best out there.

just an update for people who haven't read the other forum threads people linked...

according to the CDRLabs thread, the current firmware only uses 4 out of the 8MB available. So eventually it'll be an 8MB cache. Also, the track following error might be a media problem. They suggest using Taiyo Yudens for HDBurns. They also listed the recommended DVD media posted on the optorite website.

I got this drive and so far I'm happy with it. I haven't had any luck w/ PS2 backups on Princo's, but bought some Memorex dvd-r's and they work fine. Haven't tried hd-burn yet, but I bought this drive mostly for dvd's anyway.

Update on the error that I am getting. It seems like this drive will not do HD-Burn if it is placed in a firewire enclosure. I installed the drive internally on another computer and HD-Burn was fine. I used Maxell cdr made by Ritek. Does anyone here have done HD-Burn and their drive is in a firewire or usb enclosure? Please let us know. Thanks.

Bump!

Initially I had a problem burning with HD-burn on Nero version 5.5.10.20. I would always get a "Could Not Start Disc-At-Once" error before anything could even happen. I updated Nero to 5.5.10.35 and no problems at all. I used Fuji Taiyo Yuden, kHypermedia, Imation Neons and I've had absolutely no problem at all. I've yet to burn a dvd since I've been too poor and lazy to get some.

This is probably the best deal around on any multi-format DVD burner at the moment unless you are willing to settle for a single format drive. And as a bonus you can burn a data disc on CD-R up to 1400MB instead of the normal 700MB using Sanyo's new HD BURN technology. You will need the latest version of Nero to be able to use it.

I ordered mine last night, black faceplate. I'm so excited! ^_^

Unfortunately the firmware workaround to make this thing region-free isn't out yet. Ahh well, I'll just have to wait. Or use DeCSS.

Has anyone played back a HD-burn? I was able to do a HD-Burn. However, when I try and read the disk, it takes forever to bring it up on the screen. Any comments??

Thanks

What could you be burning with HD BURN that you could be trying to bring up on the screen? At the moment it is pretty much only good for data discs, unless you possibly wanted to burn mp3 or WMA files on a disc. Nero doesn't support any other type of burning with HD BURN at the moment although hopefully video files will be supported in the future. So if you have burned a data disc and install that disc back in the Optorite, you should see whatever files are there in Windows Explorer under the letter designating that drive on your system. I have not burned an mp3 disc, but I think I might just to see if they play OK in the Optorite. Hopefully you are aware that only the Optorite can be used to read any type of HD Burn disc.

I've been holding out on buying this drive until some more reviews come in. It's been a few weeks now so I was wondering how you guys like this drive?

I honestly don't care at all about HD-Burn. I am only concerned with it's ability to burn DVD's in both formats.

Comments appreciated!

It's a nice drive, although I find myself using the HD-Burn ability more so than the DVD burning ability. I'm just too cheap to go out and buy DVD media.

Can hd-burnt discs be read on normal cd players? I'm assuming not...

Really tempted to pick this up. I'm in a foruntate situation where I'm buying my first DVD player and burner at the same time, and I'm thinking of grabbing this burner and the cheap-o Norcent 300 on amazon. $250 for a setup that can burn and read anything sounds like a good deal to me.

Any comments? Anyone have that DVD player? Or perhaps the +R only Cendyne drive is a better deal? Any other reasons (other than HD-burn and +/- R) that I should fork out the extra $70 for this drive?

Thanks!

I'm happy with the drive myself. Like Desturel I've been too lazy to get DVDs to burn on but HD-burn is some very nice stuff for backing up data.

MIDIman: It's doubtful a cd can read them since HD-burn writes smaller pits into the cd, which a normal cd laser probably can't pick up.

Well I have burned a few DVD's, both +R and -R, and have had no problem. I have also burned some audio CD's and quite a few HD BURN data discs successfully. I have had a total of one coaster (CD), which I admit was entirely my fault and not the drives. For someone considering a burner you can't hardly go wrong with this drive. The advantage of having both +R and -R formats is that for the moment +R media is considerably higher priced. Also, you may find that your stand alone player will play one but not the other format. Actually my POS APEX won't play either. Oh well. And also HD BURN is great for data discs, and since Sanyo plans to freely distribute the technology to DVD player manufacturers, you can expect to be able to play longer or higher quality VCD/SVCD'S in the future. If they licence it properly I would expect HD BURN to gain popularity and be supported by makers of CD and DVD ROM's as well. Burn-Proof did pretty well, so we'll see.

Fascinating - I thought all of the apex are so well known because you can throw anything at them and they always work great. What model is it?

Still wondering if anyone has opinions about the Norcent player and compatibility with media coming from this burner...

The Apex I have is a 1201 which is supposedly a rebadged 1100. I got my parents one as well, and it would play VCD's and SVCD's out of the box, but would play neither +R or -R burned DVD's. I had to flash mine to get it to play VCD or SVCD discs, and initially it would actually play +R and -R burned DVD's. I was playing a +R disc in it and it was struggling to do so with numerous freezes and after about 30 minutes I got a disc error, and now when you put a burned disc in the unit it just says no disc. I forgot to mention it also quit playing VCD and SVCD discs about 90 days after purchasing it. And the warranty stipulates that after 90 days you pay the labor. I attempted unsuccessfully to get them on the phone nor did they respond to e-mails. Pretty much non-existent customer service. And the drive is very noisy. It's loud in fact. I definitely do not recommend the company or their products based on my experience. Spend a little more money and get a cheap Sony maybe. In regard to what the Apex units will play, users report different results even with the same models as I found out over at dvdrhelp.com.
