Anyone else having this problem, or do I need to return it? I'm tempted to just open it and realign it/tweak it but am afraid to void the warranty.

Whew, thought I have a defective drive there. Yup, I have the same problem too. Almost return it. Guess it's a poorly designed part of the drive....Oh wait, or is that a "feature"?

To any of you who have returned your drive...how are you avoiding the 15% restocking fee? There's $30.00 right there. And of course you have to pay to ship it back. That's another ~ $6.00. So I lose $36.00 because there's something wrong with the drive (crappy eject button)?

I do have to push it harder then my other 3 drives but it isnt that hard to push, i would call and get a rma and exchange it, most burning software have ways to open the tray without having to push the button..itskinda like the pop"o"matic in the game trouble..

I personally don't think the eject button is such a big deal. Its main issue, if you could call that an issue, is that it takes a little bit longer (2 more seconds) for the tray to eject than most other drives, after the button is pressed. Also when the light is on, the tray does not respond to pressing the button for whatever reason. The design may be a little quirky, but it never bothered me after some practice. Right now this model is still the best choice in terms of value, but apparently not for everyone.

The tray is white unfortunately. You can't tell when the drive is closed though.

As far as the eject thing goes just try pressing it once and waiting for a while. It seems to take a particularly long time to eject the CD for some reason, probably because it's slowing it down or something. That could be why the button seems so hard to push.

"There are only two things I can't stand in this world: people who are intolerant of other people's cultures, and the Dutch."

Where is this quote from? I don't get it, is it supposed to be iorny? The Dutch pride themselves on being some of the most tolerent people on the planet (or so they want people to believe.)

Quick DVD burner question: What is the main difference between - and + formats other than the + being higher cost in media and burners?

It basically coms down to [between +R and - R] how it writes, in the pits or the lands. SOmething technical, so they are [virtually] indistinguishable there. +R's have something called a Book-Field-Type, which is what the media says it is. Some burners let you change this. Currently, you can 'make' a +R say it is a DVD-Rom, or a DVD+R once burnt. Obviously, making it say it is a DVD-Rom has benefits. DVD-R's all say they are DVD-Roms once burnt AFAIK.

Some Toshiba drives even refuse to read non-bitset discs, even though they are identical to the bitset ones, save the identifier. The main difference comes in DVD+RW vs DVD-RW, as DVD+RW is supposedly a better RW format. But then again, I don't touch RW at all, so it never came into consideration.

And one last note, only Windows XP machines can read multisession DVD discs. [or so I am told] It's some new thing... personally, I'm hoping for DAO mode eventually so I can overburn stuff if it is within 200-300 MB of the total...

This drive seems to be pretty popular now, hope we don't have to wait much longer for a region free firmware, but until then there is DVD region-free software, but I think it's expensive.

I think I am going to hold out a liitle bit longer, especially since the summertime in New England is not a major computing season for me anyway.

I am kinda hanging back before I buy one of these things. Just had a few questions:

1. Did this 2.09 firmware make the cache 8mb?
2. I know that people have tried these in firewire cases, has anyone tried this on a Mac?

Thanks,
smigs

Crap! I'm getting the "'open i/o drive error" when trying to upgrade the firmware to 2.09...I'm stuck on 2.06. It says it flashed, but it's still 2.06.

I tried uninstalling Intel Application Accelorator, as well as having it be the only drive on the cable, but same problem.

just to let any of you guys still wondering if you should buy this drive or not....it works fine, I've successfully made a 4.3 gig data disc, and I've backed up the Wedding Singer and The Patriot using DVD shrink 2.3 and Nero....I'm using the TDK dvd+ 4x media that was 130 at Best Buy, this is an awesome drive. On another note, I too had the I/O error when flashing to 2.09, but my drive says thats the version so it works fine for me at least.

right now, I guess not, but you never know, what if DVD-R become like regular CD-R and are free after rebates within a matter of months, it'll be nice to have that feature.

i'd like to hear more on how HD burn is working for ppl.... and does anyone know if anything else is using it? It doesn't seem widespread enough.. i hate relying on one drive to read my data. but it sure would be nice cause dvd media is still a bit spensive Has anyone had reliablity problems? How about read back speed?

Yes the 2.09 firmware makes use of the 8MB cache.

HD burn is working absolutely fine for me. Hopefully Sanyo will get on the wheel with spreading the HD-burn technology for the dvd player and drive makers so that a firmware can be released for dvd-roms or so people can read it on their set-top players.
