In regard to flashing with new firmware - If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I would at least find out what this new firmware is supposed to do. Since it replaced the previous version althogether I would assume it still does the same thing, enable W2K and XP to recognize the drive. Maybe it does more, but my drive is working just fine. If they do come out with firmware to increase the buffer from 4 to 8MB I doubt seriously you would be able to actually notice any difference in performance.

I'm having problems burning at 4x.....preforming speed tests my speed is at 2.9x-3.0x...resulting in burns at 2.4x.

I've tried the following 4x +R media: TDK, Memorex, Fuji, and the included "That's" discs.
OS is Windows XP/sp1, P4-2.4B, DVD burner firmware upgraded to 2.07 with no effect on problem.
NERO 5.5.10.35

I've moved my IDE Devices around, testing read speed to DVD from each drive eachtime.....throughput is stuck at 2.9x-3.0x when doing a "determine maximum speed" in Nero.

My Hd's are a Maxtor 30gb, Seagate 80GB, WD SE 100GB. Under Nero's Preferences, Cache tab, testing all drives results in the following read speeds. 49mb/s WD, 39mb/s Seagate, 32mb/s Maxtor.

These numbers are waaayyy above DVD burning speeds....

I've even installed a ATA-100 PCI card and tried various combinations...no effect....speed is stuck at 2.9x-3.0x.

I'm really frustrated as to why my burner is only working at 2.4x (2.9-3.0x actual max).

HELP!

Hey, Thanks conehead:

I just dragged over some of the files that I had on my hd and after the burn, I tried to access the drive with the disk in it. I t too forever for it to show what files that were on the disk: I have both data files and phot files. No problem with bringing them up, it just took forever to see what was on the disk that is in the drive.

Sorry to be so long in getting back, but I had a few other things going on.

Additionally, I am running a AMD 2500 with 1 gig of corsare ram and a lots of hd. The time to access the hd-disk is extremely long. Not to my liking.

I also have Nero, B'Gold 5, and Roxi 5 installed. I did try to inst all a imation 4.7 gig Dvd/ It formatted it in Dir-Cd and showed 4.7 gig available. Has anyone used Roxi to access this drive?

Thanks for your input.

I received this drive yesterday and am overall pleased. But there's one minor problem with it that is really annoying me: The Eject Button. It absolutely sucks. I have to push very very hard just to get the tray to eject.

Anyone else having this problem, or do I need to return it? I'm tempted to just open it and realign it/tweak it but am afraid to void the warranty.

Well the eject button definitely doesn't stick out far enough. They have it recessed where it is almost flush with the front panel. It's the only flaw I've come up so far though.

Well i have no experiance at all with these DVD burners but I think i wil take the plunge with this one for the new system i am building. Looks like a great deal. Does anyone know of the timetable for 8x drives to appear. They usually put out the faster drives 3-5 weeks after i buy i burner. It never fails.

That eject button is indeed funky. I've got to ask though, what dvd media is everyone using with their drive? I'm interested in buying some but don't want to spend $100+ only to find out I've got incompatible media.

very interesting read

now if nero would get some software out there that would allow for long title file names i would consider buying one of these for my old time radio collection

my title name lengths have gone to 110 charactors. with primo software i can burn them to that length

Only post I have found so far that talked about DVD media stated
"I have been using Verbatim 4x +R, Ricoh discs according to DVDInfo and also burned one 2x Memorex (CMC) disc with no problems."

Has anyone had any success with the cheap 4x -r or +r disk?

I downloaded the B's Recorder Gold5 update and now I can do HD-Burn successfully on my drive in a firewire enclosure. Using Nero I always get an error when I try to do HD-Burn. I e-mailed Nero and they told me not to use the firewire enclosure. This goes to show that they need improvements in their software since B's can do HD-Burn while my drive is in the firewire enclosure.

Question for those who have updated the B's Gold and now have support for HD BURN. Does it have expanded support for what you can burn with it such as video CD's or is it limited to data or mp3/wma like Nero? Thanks.

Memorex cdr (made by CMC) still won't work with HD-Burn just to let everybody know. Maxell (Ritek) works fine. Optodisc dvd-r's work fine. Burnt a movie and no problems during playback.

I was thinking about this, but came across this Sony:

Linky

It's $20 more, but it's a Sony. No HD burn though. What do you guys think?

Nice to see that Sony's prices for their drives are coming down to earth. I had been ineterested in the Sony, but I was waiting for Lite-On to make their own drive. The early Lite-On's were rebadged Sony's. Eventually Lite-On will be making theirs and the Sony drives. I just prefer Lite-On's firmware to that of Sony's. Looks like you don't get much in the way of sofware with the Sony either. Personally, I am glad I got a burner with HD BURN, it will probably be six months before you see any ohther HD BURN drives out there.
I haven't seen any heads up comparisons of the Optorite with other drives, but it works very well.

I got my drive about 2 days ago. I took out my old Toshiba DVD/CD-RW combo drive (with a Region hack *sniff*) and put this thing in, installed B's Recorder GOLD and Sonic.MyDVD, then restarted Win2k. From the get-go it worked fine, read CDs just fine and no driver issues. I haven't tried playing a DVD in it yet but I'll get to that tonight most likely. Yesterday I burned a quick Family Guy VCD at 24x on some no-name discs with B's. (Harmony is the brand if anybody cares. K-mart bankruptcy sales rock) On my Cyberhome DVD-300 the episodes played mostly okay, though during the fast-motion areas I saw some distortion at the line edges, but there was absolutely no skipping or jerking whatsoever. Fast forwarding and rewinding all worked fine as well. Pretty good for burning a VCD at 24x. Anyway, as soon as I get some more DVD±R discs beyond the one they included with the drive I'll test it out further. Fun fact: a DVD-VCD can hold 450 minutes of video, or roughly speaking an entire 21 episode season of Family Guy. That makes me happy. ^_^

Beware, Sony doesn't provide tech support and firmware upgrade for their OEM version of the DVD burners, although you can upgrade this one model to DRU-500A on your own. Just remember that 500A is quite picky with the -R media (meaning no cheap stuff) if that's what you are planning to use with the burner. The software is included by the dealer, not the software included in the retail version. Buy with your own risk or get a retail version of the DRU-510A for $280.

A question for anyone who's gotten one of these with the black faceplate - is the tray black too? Or is it just the faceplate that's black with a white plastic tray...

FWIW- Someone from Optorite posted a message over at cdrlabs.com stating that a new firmware revision would be up on their website sometime next week which would increase the buffer from 4 to 8MB as it was initially advertised. I still doubt that you would be able to tell any difference. The firmware will be listed as 2.09.

MysticMan1, have you discovered any review on the Optorite DD0203?

My 1.6A just decided to refuse to boot into winxp. Scared the crap out of me. But fortunately when I hook the HD to USB2.0, I could still access my files. Still I am not going to take my chances with HDs.

Gonna take the plunge on one of these DVD burners soon.
