umm..wht is the difference between watts and volts? ... it seems like the voltage is selectable so it shouldn't be a problem..

Watts is the power rating, and a simple answer is it is volts times amps, ie 12v * 3 amps is 36 watts.

The concern to have with ALL non factory power adapters is what does it do when you ask for more than the spec power, ie 12v and you need 3 or more amps, does the voltage drop, or does the unit heat up, or does some fuse pop and shut it off. The funky part is that some factory units reduce the voltage when the amp draw is too high, AND some devices depend on that to keep from burning out internal parts. I had a portable printer like that, lost the adapter, bought a very good quality replacement, and at the first paper jam the motor drive circuit toasted when the "good" ac adapter didn't drop voltage as the current went too high.

If all else fails, I am going to try Xantrex, XPower Mobile Plug 75, going for less than $30 on fleaBay.

Seems that Radio Shack carries what they call Adaptaplugs, and there may be one for Dells. Can't find it online, so I will have to take my chances.

Very similar item to the xantrex sells at www.samsclub.com for $14. Search for inverter at the site.
