PetCo is having a sale on 200G buckets of Red Sea salt.

Regular price is about $64.99.

Sale price is now only $24.99!

I bought 3 and saved $105

It's not really ALL that expensive. Enough salt for a small 20 gallon tank will cost you about $10 or less... In most cases, you're paying extra for shipping. Those buckets I bought are 55 lbs each, that costs money to ship when you don't buy them locally.

Also it's not just plain "salt", it's manufactured from the sea and additional trace elements are sometimes added. Takes machinery to do that stuff.... plus cost of shipping it to the retailer, then cost of shipping to the stores, then to the consumer...

Filter? Who uses those any more? Berlin method baby. A good protein skimmer, lots of live rock, a sump for your refigium if you want, but I like a Deep Sand Bed instead.

You can use ocean water, if can go five miles out and get it. The stuff along the coast is generally too polluted.

Salt is not going to run you that much, remember, only initial setup will you need enough salt for all 125 gallons. Make up water is just plain water, and you only do 10% to 25% water changes.

If you'll getting into coral, lighting is another thing you'll need to consider. Rule of thumb is 5+ watts per gallon.

My tropical fish store ships in ocean water from Catalina Island. It's 52 cents a gallon or something. Cheaper than buying salt and fresh water IMO

I'd agree with everything here except that "5+ watts per gallon" rule... lighting depends on what you're keeping, and what type of lights you're buying. Metal Halides will give you a lot of light in a little space but you could have two 250W bulbs over a 4 foot tank and have the same 500W's worth of VHO lights and you WON'T get the same effect as far as growth.

Lighting is a per basis opinion...

If I wanted to fill up my 200G tank like that... it would cost me $104 + tax (but actually including everything the tank is about 275 gallons)
Buying the salt... hmm... $24.99 for 200G's worth...

True true. I was only stating the rule of thumb since the posting didn't know what type of corals they will be keeping.

One of my local fish stored don't even bother with even lighting. They use one MH on a track system, that glides back and forth for some corals, and all their clams.

The clams are still very colorful, so it must be getting enough light. But like you said, it all depends on your situation. Every circumstance has exceptions. It was just a general rule of thumb.

That's actually a great idea. It's been discussed before but i've yet to see anyone put it into use. I heard of one guy doing something similar but never found out if he ever did it or not.

Any idea where he got the equipment?

No I don't. I'll ask them when I go there again. I even looked at the manufacturer name on the system when I was there, but got too excited over the clams ($20 for Ultra's) that I forgot.

If you are in the San Francisco Bay area, check it out of at 6th avenue Aquarium. They are sort of a wholesaler to the public. All corals except Galaxia's and Elegance are $18.99 or 10 for $150 and I think 6 for $100.

On Sundays, they have "take a chance day". Basically, its the all the fish they need to get rid of, they bag them up and you take a chance for 90% off the regular price.

Wow... sounds pretty cheap. Must be nice... it'll cost me $20 locally for a small (less than 1" X 1") frag of green star polyps...

The best place in town (and only good place) went out of business as of the end of this month...

Quick google search and I found it:

http://www.altgarden.com/site/lightmovers/htmldocs/lightrail3.html

Figures its a hydroponics system.

Those coral prices sound like east coast prices. For that price, I'd just get them from Jeff's Exotic 9 for $99 deal. Even with shipping, it comes out to be $157.

I got my star polyp from PetCo. They didn't have a saltwater guy there, so everything was dying. I made a deal with them for the polyp and bubble coral for $30. A week of feeding it DT, and they are both trying to over take the tank

Hi all...
I have a wall that is 11'x11'. I'd like to build a tank that spans the length of the wall and is about 10-12" deep, and 3-4' tall.

I was thinking about using 3/8" acrylic for it, but I've only seen 10'x4' sheets. Also, this is quite expensive ($650 just for the acrylic sheets). Am I not being realistics that I could build the tank for a lot less than $650?

As an aside, would 3/8" be thick enough for that size tank?

Thanks for your time and help...

You only need acrylic for the front. You build the back out of poured concrete.

Go nuts like this d00dz

http://www.mr4000.com/

SCUBA gear for algae cleaning not included.

Catman2:
What do you have? Any frags you want to sell? Most of mine aren't ready to be fragged yet. I'm interested in some Cat Paw if you have any.

I will be trying to frag my pagoda in about a month.

Chrisisbored or anyone else interested, pm me and I'll send you a photo of the aquarium. Green tree coral and finger coral both need cut back.

good place, but i guess they changed their sunday deal thing? a few years back (when we were stocking our 135), they had a whole bunch of stuff shipped in from the wholesaler the night before, and in the morning they would sell that stuff really cheaply. so everything was new stock and still bagged from the wholesaler.

we had an emporer angel from them, and still have a blue-face angel, majestic angel, and a couple of clowns
