Taken from FW:

Outpost.com has the PS2 Network Adapter (White Box/OEM) for $19.99 + shipping (tax in CA). I received mine today and it the official made-by-sony adapter that has the IDE connectors with which you can connect a Hard Drive. There's been a lot of buzz around the console world regarding HDLoader which hardware wise requires the PS2 Network Adadpter, PS2 Console, and almost any 40-120gb Hard Drive.

HDLoader

A FW member posted that this is available for $29.99 at Fry's B&M as well.

PS2 Network Adaptor

As I'm typing this post I checked the link on outpost.com and the availability has changed to "available for pre-order." Not sure if this means OOS or more stock coming shortly. Nevertheless, a good deal.

I just paid 30 dollars for mine. Not a bad deal but $19.99 would be nicer. Guess I would've only saved a few dollars after shipping costs. Played around with HDLoader a little last night. Had some issues with the two drives I used. Finally got one to format and then it locked up on the next reboot.

What type of drives did you try using. Word is that Maxtor drives seem to work best. I'm planning on trying to use the 40gb Maxtor 5400rpm that was in my ReplayTV.

Is the adapter you got the one with both Ethernet and modem connectors or the one with Ethernet connector only?

Try clicking the link. "With both a 56k modem and a 10/100 Ethernet connection built in..." You can also tell it has both by looking at the picture.

The white box item I got from Fry's B&M was a Sony brand HDD compatible ethernet and phone line networking adapter. Looks brand new and comes with software. It was $29.99, but for me is AZ it would have been like $7 shipping and still had to pay tax, so I would have only saved a dollar. They wouldn't give me a pricematch.

$19.99 in Austin's Friday ad, but already ordered one online. darn. "barebone"
So, what's up with this "hdloader"? It won't let you back stuff up? so the only advantage is the loading times?

hdloader is ment to do nothing illegeal, its only real advantage is decreased loading times, but it makes a HUGE difference.... Im personally sporting a 42.5 GB IBM Deskstar GXP in there .... plus theres the advantage of not ever having to find the game i want, i got like the 10 tities i play most in there, just turn ps2 on and go....

$29.99 on the website now and you have to call to see if they have it in stock most likely not. I saw a post on spoofee few weeks ago that Costco is selling the PS2 FF online with HD for $50. I could be wrong.

How does this thing work? I have a 250GB Maxtor drive laying around here. Does HDLoader/Sony BB Adaptor support 48-bit LBA (more than 128GiB) drives?

Do you load in your original game, and it copies the DVD to the HD? Couldn't you just ... hmm, nevermind.

question ... I just bought a new ps2 from walmart last night and it was a combo one that included a 2 port (56k and ethernet) network adapter thingy. So that is actually a hdd and if so, what size is it and will it work with HDLoader?

I've got a 120gb deskstar working with mine.
formatted and booted without an issue.

Also, it looks like the PS2 will only let you use a max of 127GB (125 usable), so anything more than 120 is overkill, unless you can find a 130GB drive to minimize wasted space.

No, the network adapter is NOT the hard drive. The addon module for older PS2s (the network adapter being posted above) has a connection for standard IDE HDDs. I don't know about the new generation PS2s, but unless you can remove it, I don't think it's possible to hook up a HDD to it.

just "called for availability" and the guy told me that they wouldn't be getting anymore of these units, and that the web site hasn't been updated.

I just got HD loader last night and used it with my PS2 with the Network Adapter ($19.99 from Fry's B&M) and Final Fantasy XI Sony 40GB HD kit ($59.99 at Fry's B&M the other day).

I could have installed one of the hard drives I have hanging around, but for I thought $60 was OK for a perfectly compatible 40GB hard drive, hard drive mounting hardware, and FF XI game, although I haven't even played it yet.

I connected some of my hard drives to the adapter just to check, although I did not power it up to see if any of them really work. All my Maxtor (3), IBM/Hitach (1), and Seagate (1) drives fit perfectly with the adapter's 4 pin power and IDE layout, but none of my WD drives (2) did not fit.

HDloader worked fine with one of the games I installed to it.

I learned today that it's not that easy copying the entire game to the hard drive with out getting any errors. It totally depands on the condition of the game disks.

HD Loaders works fine for me on a 60 gig maxtor. The speed boost, however, is all over the place. For some games, there is virtually no loading time now, but for other games, it is almsot exactly the same as with the disc.

So, nobody has answered the question that everybody seems to be repeating. If you can't play backups on it, exactly how are you getting the games to play? Does it require the original disc to verify that you can now load it off the HD?

No it does not require the original disc. Once it is on the HD, the game disc is no longer needed. The only disc you need is the HDLoader to get the menu.

There are ways to get your legal backups on HDLoader. There are window based programs that allow you to do this if your PS2 isn't modded. You just need to put your HD on your system as Slave and then use the program to add or remove games.
