Caught this ad in today's local paper. Chicagoland CompUSA's have the ACOM 32x10x40 External Firewire CD-RW Drive for FREE after $130 rebate. $149.99 less $20 instant less $130 MIR. This is a HOT deal. Picked one up in the Chicago (downtown) store, they had a load of them. Just checked stock and all Chicago areas store show inventory....

This is only for the greater chicagoland area. They are opening a new store in Lombard. I called first to verify that all was legit, and it was. So I just went there, and the bums told me: "We can only sell 15 a day." !!!???###@@***XX After a llllllooooooonnnnnnggggg wait, not letting them shoo me like a fly, finally the manager popped up and after an argument was promised a cdrw firewire drive tommorow.

We'll see, we'll see. It better be there, if not, kaplowey!!!

I do hate Compusa, but I hate bestbuy more.

This is good outside the Chicago area for only a few bucks more. I picked one up for $149 in OH. The $130 rebate still applies, seelink here. So you can still pick one up for $19 +tax at other CompUSA outlets. YMMV.

Wow, what a mess lombard was regarding this Firewire Drive.

I could say some really nasty things about certain groups of people, but that is uncalled for...

I did score a drive, the last one available, and I was the 11th person in line. This was mainly due to the rudeness of the group of people I won't discuss.

I did speak with the manager about all this though and he wasn't happy.

FYI. . . appears to be a Mitsumi mechanism inside the firewire case.

I scored one in the Seattle area (the Montlake Terrace area specifically) and it appears to be a Lite-On drive in the firewire enclosure. You have to ask for the rebate, but they will print one off the website for you if you ask nicely.

I don't have a scan of the flyer, but if your thinking about trying to PM this to another CompUSA store, it won't work because the flyer specifically says 'at the following chicagoland locations only' or something like that...

I also noted that the box said 'smartburn technology', which to me says the drive is a Lite-On. Not bad at all.

Plugged this drive into my ActionTec PCI firewire card (which I had to install for the first time, I bought as a hot deal from this forum like a year ago and never even opened it) and nero found it very quickly!!!


Turns out its the same drive as the Mistumi 480ATX in the Cendyne 32x12x40 Lightning II box that has been on special lately.

I got this at the Irving, TX store. I got the $150 price. I called in the morning to have them hold it for me. When I went to go pick it up, the lady said a lot of people had been calling about this drive but they kept it for me. She also said if I hadn't showed up, they would have sold it. It will come out to around $30. Not bad for an external CD-RW drive.

anybody else having problems getting this drive to work? win xp pro on a vaio laptop, the drive installs but doesn't appear. suggestions? email me if u can with suggestions (and sorry if this is not the right forum to post this in, seemed the most appropriate)

I had no problem running this on my test system (an old compaq desktop with 96MB Ram and a PII-233) which runs XP Pro.

Your firewire cord may be bad or you may not have the firewire port configured properly on the laptop?

I'm going to add it using an adaptec PCMCIA card to my laptop sometime this week, so I'll let you know, but it shouldn't matter.

And win XP pro registers it the same as Mistumi with the 16MB buffer, and it looks exactly the same (the drive on sale last week at OM, and on sale this week at Staples)
