Check to make sure they don't charge you for it. It seems like they don't keep their employees informed of this, and even if they know they don't understand it completely. I had a postal clerk deny me purchasing a priority mail postage cause she thought that the shipping was free, not just the delivery confirmation. I was worried that my package didn't ship but it did. Print out the page too just in case.

Yeah, printed out a label for my idiot parents to send something to my sister at DUKE, but they bent when the postal clerk said:

"Nope, its only free when you purchase postage online too" I was like, WTF, you can't even buy postage on USPS.gov!!!

hmm...
my post office is far away from home

can u just print the dc label, put the stamp on (if u know the exact postage) and leave it in your mailbox like the outbound letter so the postman will collect it

or u have to go to the post office to send it ?

I've done the free DC a couple times, here's what USPS said. Since it's electronic and entered into the system when the label is generated, they don't scan the number in when you bring the package in to get it shipped. That means you don't get a nice message saying "this package has been accepted at blah blah blah." The only info you get is when a delivery attempt has been made, successful or unsuccessful. Not too much of a problem, DC was really only meant to confirm delivery (hence the name). Was never meant as a means to track if a package had actually been shipped.

Only if it's 12 ounces or less, are you allowed to leave it unattended in a collection box. Anything that weighs more than 12 ounces you must give directly to a postal clerk, even if postage is affixed (I think giving it to your postal home delivery carrier would qualify). You may thank the Unabomber for this rule! However, any type of metered mail is exempt from this weight collection policy -- this includes stamps.com or other internet postage services.

Here's another tip:
To save yourself from entering your address every time, put in just your From address and submit it. Bookmark the page that is returned. Now you can use that page to create the labels.

Be wary of this DC. I have shipped several of my packages with this 'free' service. They are supposed to scan it when gets somewhere initially and then when it gets to where it is going. Well on two that I know of, one has gotten there and the only scan is when the main center scanned it when they got it so I have no idea when it got there, on the second one it was scanned in at the main center but have no clue where the package (two weeks late) is at. I believe they don't always scan these. I never lost a package before and this is giving me a headache, my buyer is verry unhappy.

damn, the label is kinda big. gonna take a lot of tape/glue to put that sucker on, unless you have those fedex or ups shipping pouches.

i'm tempted to go and pick up some but don't know whether they'll get pissy about it like the usps for using their shipping supplies for non usps related activities.

Airborne Express has these free 8.5" x 5.5" self adhesive laser printer labels (form 1239) that you get in packs of a 100. It's actually letter size and half of it is plain paper and the other half is the label. Nice thing about it is that there's no logo on the label part! You can also get free boxes, padded envolopes... get the small padded pouches (Item 703 SPP) they always come in handy.

Hehehe, just click on the icon above to get to the Airbrone supply order form. Please remember, the labels come in packs of a 100 so don't go crazy ordering 100 packs!

Are you required to use them for Airborne Express shipping only? I know that using free USPS Priority stuff for other purposes can be a violation of federal law...

I used this for the second time today. My wife brought it in and asked them to scan it at acceptance and the postal clerk tried to tell her that she had to pay for delivery confirmation (the first time I used it I didn't bother to ask them to scan it). I had sent my wife with the information that prints with the label which said it was free, and had underlined it, so she showed it to the clerk who took it to the local postmaster. He told her that it was only free when you prepay the shipping, so my wife took the package and went home. I had her go back and just pay the $3.50 to ship it and not ask to have it scanned, and they accepted it (very big of them, eh?).

Are you supposed to be able to get them to scan it at acceptance time so you can show that it's been mailed? I mailed out an item that my daughter is trading and it would be nice to be able to show that it is en route rather than just the "we were supposed to have received this yesterday".

Oh, and I recall reading elsewhere that highlighting the bar code in green encouraged scanning along the way. I did so and hopefully it will work as the last time there were no entries until it was delivered.

Will it do any good to complain about it at the USPS site? Will they educate the local postmaster?

Why wouldnt you use this? Makes such a readable label for the postal carrier. It does confirm delivery still, and is great for cheaper items your not as worried about.

Been in my favorites for about 3 months. Not many people know about it however.

Ok, if you like the free DC, check out this website.. Endicia

They only charge you $9.99 a month for the service (cheaper than ANYONE including Stamps.com) and the software they give you lets you not only print eDC's, but also track them! I sell stuff online on eBay and ship most everything via Priority Mail and this software has saved my butt with customer many times. Well worth the 9.99 a month not to have to fill out the form on the USPS website, wait for the label to come up, cut it out, and tape it to the box, then back up to print another. This software prints LABELS for you so you just slap them on and go. It can even sense when you have highlighted and copied or cut an address and brings it into the software for postage printing. TOO COOL.

Check it out!!

What they really need is someone to actually take the '5 mins or less' commitment seriously. I dread the experience of going to my local post office, trying to lug 10 USPS boxes through the door (non-automatic) and stand on line for 15 mins or more. BTW - the labels I printed out via this post weren't recognised by the staff and I still had to pay 40 cents on each one! What the USPS really needs is to have a more automated, efficient service and a better means to physically get the stuff out. This is a good start though and shows someone's thinking correctly.
