Yeah, Wichita is a nice place. Big enough to have plenty to do, small enough that traffic is rarely a hassel. Pretty safe town, but beware, BTK (bind, torture, kill) is back after 25 years! (BTK News Article)

They guy with the 100,000 shack post is just retarded. It all depends on where you live. My exact home yes exact by the same builder goes for $70k more 8 miles south of me with 1/2 the lot size and we have a better neighborhood and schools and less crowded. And to top it all of 1% less sales tax. I think i will prefer to pay lots less and drive 25mins to the beach rather than pay lots more and still have to drive 20mins to the beach

I lived in Overland Park for a couple of years. I loved it up there. Too bad I had a sucky job and moved away to get away from it. I did think that they do love to tax things up there. Just licensing fees to drive cars around was pretty steep. And you can have the state income tax. It wasn't too bad on the Missouri side though. The food was wonderful up there.

I'm surprised so many of you are comparing Overland Park to central Kansas. Overland Park (in Johnson County) is a very very small portion of Kansas in the northeastern corner of the state. The rest of the state is nothing like Johnson County (which is one of the richest per capita counties in the nation - or at least it was several years ago).

The only reason you would ever want to move to a small town like this is if you wanted to start your life over, away from the rest of the world. Small town lifestyle is great if you're into that. A lot of people from urban areas will never understand what it is like to know every face in town and actually be part of the community. It is a totally different way of living, and I wouldn't say it is better or worse than urban lifestyle. They each have their good parts. Overland Park is very suburban. Not rural like the town in the article.

wow, you guys do have it good. Here in Vancouver, BC, housing prices are through the roof! at least $300-$350/sq foot downtown, with peaks at about $550/sq foot, and over $250/sq foot everywhere else. Mind you, these are not necessariliy new condos/houses either. Most houses here were built just after WW2!

Then again, the ladies here are sweeeeet

"must build a house within a year and live in it for a year."

So I don't suppose I can just drive up there with some homeless folks so that we can take over all of the plots by building up our empire of cardboard boxes? or is it actually $100,000 minimum they want you to build a house there for?

Kansas living is only half bad - the Kansas half!

Actually I'd consider it for a few years if it had broadband since 99% of my work is over the internet and I'd love to take a break from the metropolis for a while.

All of you complaining about Kansas is fine -- we don't want you here anyway - we don't want to share our piece of heaven. It's a great place to live and raise a family. (I live about 25 minutes from where that article was about... and yes, it's for real)

I wonder that too. And, $100,000 by whose price? The value of the home? Or the actual cost to build it? Personally, I'm delaying construction on my own home because of the current prices of wood (particularly plywood for $20 a sheet when it was under $10 a year ago - waiting for it to go back down since it fluctuates so much.) I can't imagine how much of a house I could build for $100,000 if labor costs were a minimum because I did most of the work myself.

So I'm a snob, retarded, and a moron. Is that better or worse than persons who cast derogatory remarks at others?

BTW, for everyone who is quoting the price of construction from past experience, go check lumber prices right now.

Johnson County, KANSAS OWNS YOU!
(I lived in Corvallis Oregon (voted #7 best place to live) and I have to say Johnson County Kansas > Corvallis)

Try Blue Valley, Overland Park, Leawood.
All are better than 99% of cities in America.

Do a search on the median income.

What do we have?
Sprint Headquarter
AMC Headquarter
Country Plaza
Downtown Plaza
Oak Park
119th/I35
Lawrence Kansas - Jayhawks KU WOOT WOOT WOOT
Worlds of Fun
Kansas City Zoo
KC chiefs, Royals, Wizards
JCCC
Different Foods up the butt
Shawnee Mission Park - It is freaking HUGE
Internet Boardband is just fine here, I have been getting 300+K/sec at 3 different locations for over 5 years now.

Lacking:
Ocean, mountain
However, plenty of hilly biking trails.

People who think Kansas have nothing is truly dumb.

Ymmy,

Dude, quit telling everybody, let them remain ignorant.

BTW, I practically grew up in Shawnee Mission Park - from catching snakes and turtles when I was a kid to playing frisbee and cruising chicks in high school and college. Great place....

I live in the Northwest now. Two things I miss - thunderstorms and tanned chicks. I am sure you can relate

hey, before I moved here, everyone I knew thought there was nothing but cows here.

It is one of THE best place to live in America... that people don't know about.

My parents live in a 650K house in San Diego. You can get the same house for about $250 - 300K here.

Btw, if you like to shop, I dare you find a place that have a Higher Shops per square mile ratio than Johnson County.

Yep! Yep! We still eat roasted opposum, only ride horses, shoot buffalo and wash our clothes in the river. You folks from the coasts definitely don't want to come out here.

I sent the article out to my architecture department here at CMU. Was proposing a community of sustainable houses =T.
