Just got the Fry's ad from my mom (thank god she works in the next building over since I don't get the paper). Anyway, they're advertising the EXACT MB/CPU combo that I bought this past week for $219 at this same Fry's. Anyway here's the specs:

Athlon XP 1700+ Bare CPU
ECS K7S5A MB

That's $50 less than I payed a few days ago! Anyway, do you guys know if they PM for something I bought from them? I'm calling them in a minute to figure it out.

*UPDATE*

Okay so they won't price match me because it's a different offer. The one I bought was a retail CPU while this one is a bare CPU. Sucks to be me I guess, but at least the $219 deal was still pretty damn good.

Their So. Cal. ads state that they have a 30 day price guarantee, so you should be good.
Too bad they don't take Amex so we could use Blue for extra protection....

Crank.... what Fry's are you speaking of? location that is....
Are you sure they dont take American Express Blue.... it seems very strange you say they dont.
Anyone else out there know if they do or do not?

It's not listed on their ad as an accepted cc. I just called them for ya and confirmed that they do not take Amex. Sorry.

BTW cheapest pricewatch has this combo is $193 (didnt check which MB though). This is a really good MB that Fry's is selling (best of the budget ones at least).

Bit, I called my (Sacramento) Fry's and confirmed that they don't accept Amex. So its not just San Diego.

Damnit.. missed another Fry's special again. I was waiting for this special to come around again, but I ran out of patience and went out and bought it at a different store. Maybe, I need a second system

Oh, I don't think Fry's ever accepted AMEX cc's.. if they did, they stopped accepting them before or since a couple years ago. I remember I had to drive down to Fry's for work one day to make an emergency purchase. I was given the company card which is a Corporate AMEX. They didn't accept it and I ended up having to charge it to my own CC and get reimbursed later.

I think I'll get one tomorrow, I hope there are still some left. What is the differences, if any, between the +'s and the xp's anyways? thanks.

Not sure I understand what you want to know, but this Athlon 1700+ IS an XP... full name is AthlonXP 1700+

Does that clear that up?

FYI you can pick this same combo up at newegg (buying each separately) for something like $195. plus shipping, but the shipping should be less than CA sales tax (and you'd be paying whoever you bought it from to ship it anyway ...) might be easier to pay the exra $20 and just get it directly from them? just a thought.

If it is they aren't advertising it here (SD). The only list an Athlon 1700+ w/ Soyo Dragon+ for $259.
It would be nice though

Picked up this deal at the Phoenix Fry's last night...no problems getting it up and running (with 512MB Crucial PC2110 DDR SDRAM from BB and Antec SX830 case from Outpost). It smokes my old Celeron 566 / Intel I815 combo!

They also had the same deal with a retail CPU for $219, if you really want the longer warranty.

Ya, they have the same deal in the bay area. Fry's doesn't accept AMEX anywhere. They jus don't. IT costs them too much cuz AMEX rates are higher then anyone elses.

A CSR at Fry's told me they don't accept Amex, cause Amex service charges are higher than most credit cards, i guess that how they make up for our Price gurantees, extended warranties. Better to take it out on the retailers than consumers with lame hidden charges like other credit cards.

Oh just a helpful tidbit. Fry's does have a 30 day price protection plan but, it does not work for CPU's or memory that is limited to 14 days.

Anyone know if there is a scan of the Fry's ad with the $169 combo price? I think I'd like to try and get it here in Houston. The only deal advertised here was for the 1700 and the Soyo Dragon + for $249.

Thanks,
D.

They must of changed their policies. I used to buy with my AMEX all the time at the Anaheim Fry's, but I haven't been back there for a while. I'm waiting for the one near me at the City of Industry to open up.

Another update... I went to Fry's the other night and could not get price matched. The $169 advertised is different than the one I bought for $219. Mine is retail, theirs is just a bare CPU apparently. So no $50 back for me =(

Too bad for us on the East Coast that there are no stores around here. Furthermore, it blows that Outpost.com wouldn't pricematch to their own Fry's store.

Fry's here in North California ran out of the combo 1700+ Athlon with ECS motherboard. So the floor sale person gave me a shuttle board K31 for the same combo price, $169. Don't know if this board is any better than the KCS but it didn't get a favorable review from Tom's Hardware. But can't beat it for the price of the combo.

It's a nice deal. Just make sure you don't get returned stuff

I wouldn't take an AK31A if they gave it to me free. They're full of issues... everything from voltage regulation to RAM compatibility and stability. And you've got the usual buggy VIA core logic as well.

K7S5A is a far better choice, and a perfect complement for the CPU.
