I have one of these receivers and haven't really had any problems with it. I'm outside philadelphia and don't have cable at home, and this pulled in all of the regular over the air stations we'd usually get, and then some (although I don't speak spanish, so I deleted a few of those, but there's also a few other english channels that came in). Using a Silver Sensor (Bought at Sears, but amazon.com should have them for much cheaper) indoor antenna, works great, although some use outdoor antennas for better reception.
On the eBay units - be weary. There is more than one model of these tuners. The ones at Walmart will cost $199 usually, and will need no monthly fee or subscription, it will work out of the box. The ones on eBay for cheap, however, are probably disabled and will need some card plugged into it to work.
I like how the tuner is able to pull down what's being shown on the channels in a kind of free electronic program guide, but that depends on each channel sending out the scheduling information. However, I believe all channels are supposed to be broadcasting this soon.
