Everybody keeps telling me that a steak knife is really handy, but why would I use a steak knife when a fork and butter knife to cut my steaks.

There's more to it than the ABILITY. If you cook every night (or at least a few times a week) a good set of knives is a valuable investment. The weight, balance, construction, and materials all have an effect as to how EFFECTIVELY you're able to cut food. Try dicing tomatoes with a butter knife or carving a turkey. Slicing bread is much, much easier (no squished slices) with a proper knife. Even cheap knives that were designed for the purpose would do a better job.

The problem with cheaper knives is how well you're able to do something. Cooking becomes a chore and by the time you're done slicing your half-frozen chicken breast for the stir-fry, you're ready to go to sleep (or worse, the emergency room).

How much does it suck to use a crappy 15" monitor when you're used to a 19? Knives can be the same way.

Nipples - hah! It's a good point - chicks dig a man that can cook. And, even if you can't cook, why not look like you can?

Also, the number one source of kitchen injuries is dull knives - so get decent ones, and keep them sharp!

It's out of stock at Amazon, so orders placed now will be fulfilled by Cooking.com or KitchenEtc. That's why the $349.99 price, the lack of free shipping, and no $20 gift certificate with order now.

Just wanted to chime in, I own these and I love them. My parents also own a set of 4 star, which are great as well. I like the curved handle, but to each his own. I do question consumer reports though, b/c the steel on the 4 and 5 stars are identical. I wonder why they said the 5 star will corrode more than others? Anyway, I have had mine for 2 years, and they are still like new.

I like the look of these knives, but I already have a full 4-star set. The 5-star doesn't have as many blade choices. I use a 10" chef and have a 9" slicer, which you cannot get with the 5-star.

Any one used the Miracle Blades brand of knives? I just saw an infomercial that made the product look impressive. But that could just be the infomercial.

Oh

My

Gawd!

I wish I could get these. I have a rather nice set of Chicago Cutlery I've built up over the years. Some are about 10 years old. Manycould all stand a refresh (I didn't know how to take care of them properly when I first got them, and some have suffered as a result). My wife would kill me if I bought that Pro S set, but man, wouldn't that be sweet? People can say a knife is a knife, but as anyone who cooks a lot knows, cutting a tomato with a Henckels is soooo much better than cutting it with a Ginsu.
