Picked one up at the Mission Viejo Store, still sealed in the box. Last new one as far as I could tell. They had another one left, but the box was opened & it looked a little used. Strange thing is that it rang up with 0.00 sales tax... the clerk thought that was strange, didn't seem to care. Saved me another $3.74

Holycrap- I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU!!!!! FINALLY SOMEONE SAYS IT, I WOULD HAVE EARLIER BUT I DIDN'T READ THIS POST. Tominator- i think you are totally wrong, my dad has that same jvc svhs vcr you are talkin about and we have the Sony WEGA 36" XBR tv and i would take the dvd over the svhs ANYDAY! There is still a significant difference just going by quality! And not to mention the audio too!

Someone bought out 30 VCR's from the 57th and broadway store last night.
He was supposedly "donating" them to schools. Yeah right.
If you're reading this now, thanks for being so gready, jerk. :|

Do any of you Portlanders know if CompUSA has these in stock? If so, which store? Thanks.

RossMAN: according to the website "in-store availability" tracking thingy, they are not in stock in Tigard or Jantzen Beach.

Southcenter Compusa in Seattle had about 5 left about 2 hours ago. I picked one up for 49.88 out he door. No taxes were charged! Just hooked it up and it's a sweet deal for 49.88! Picture quality looks great.
For all you Seattlites you better hurry!

I wonder if I call a Washington CompUSA if I can order it from them via e-mail, fax or phone?

Or will they ship it to a local Portland, Oregon CompUSA?

Although my setup is far from 'highend,' I'll stand by my statement. My JVC 32 inch TV has as good a picture as any WEGA IMHO. I could have and almost did by the Sony VEGA, but after comparing them both side by side, I could see little difference. The flat screen is neat, but not for $400 more!

I've had both VHS and DVDs of the same movie. Played exact scenes one after the other. Neither me or several friends could tell much difference. Sure, there was some, but nothing anyone watching the movie and not doing the comparison would notice.

As far a audio, there is no argument!

This argument is rather mute I'll admit, as neither of us will see the other's system. I'm extremely satisfied with mine.

Tominator, I think you and buffboy are comparing apples to oranges. It can be objectively proven both that DVDs can provide noticably more accurate output than S-VHS, and that most Wegas provide a closer to the original broadcast picture than a 32 inch JVC. I would be very surprized if even JVC would argue with that. On the other hand, whether the difference matters to you, whether it is worth the difference in cost, is totally subjective. (i.e.- Is a 1.3 Ghz Pentium 4 worth the difference in cost from a 800 Mhz Celeron? well I guess that depends).
The problem with S-VHS is that the only source for movies that can give DVD-like results is DVD (and you have to find a DVD player that you can disable macrovision to record). Record off of TV/Cable or even Satellite and the differences are obvious. Not knocking S-VHS, they are just not the same.
P.S. I just saw not yet released 40" Progressive Scan Wega XBR Tube and it is amazing. To heck with the 1.3 Gig pentium, I am starting my Wega savings fund today.

Hi to everyone who bought one (or more):

I went to my CompUSA store today, gave them my receipts for the two VCRs, and they refunded me 10% off the purchase price because of the Friday/Saturday sale 10% off sale. Now there was one left on the shelf (Paradise Valley Arizona) so I don't know if their position would have been different if there were none to sell.

Best,

Steve S
