For those that have Knology or are in an area where Knology is available, you may be able to get 7mb down/512k up. I just got it...costs approx $10 more per month for me to go from 3mb down/256k up to the new plan. Not a bad deal...I think the new price per month is somewhere around 49.99 for the upgraded speed. I've done speedtest from dslreports.com and through NewsBinPro and I'm consistently getting around 6.5mb down/480k up.

Anyone have experience in the NYC area from Optimum Online and RoadRunner? I got RR but am getting charged $50+ for the service. Was thinking to go with Optimum for $29.99. I was wondering if the speed was the same/better, and what about the packet loss? Basically if the speed/service is not so good with Optimum, I'll stick with RR. Not worth saving $20 a month for a bunch of headaches.

I'm a bit confused on the terminology. On RR my download speeds are 650 to 700, does that mean it is a 7.0Mbps connection? On Optimum Online they say it's a 15Mbps connection, I can't imagine Optimum charging $29.99 for 15Mbps while RR charges $50 for 7.0Mbps. Someone clear this up for me, Thanks.

650 to 700 (and I am assuming the 650 to 700 is in MBps) translates to 5.2 to 5.6 Mbps. Seems you have the 7.0 Mbps connection, although it is not giving you the full 7.0 Mbps.

I'll try...

Take the Mbit # and divide by 8192 (that's 1024 * 8). For DSL multiply your result by .85 since there's a little overhead associated with it.

So, a 3Mbit DSL connection would be 3,000,000 / 8192 = ~366KB/sec. Multiply that * .85 to get realistic #'s, so 366 * .85 = 311KB/sec is probably what you'd get.

Cable doesn't tend to have that hit, but cable does tend to fluctuate wildly if people on your node do a lot of uploading (think P2P) or if the node is simply near capacity.

Speed is what you want if you're a surfer or downloader. Low ping, low latency, and no packetloss is what matters for most gamers.

Just a little baffling that something that costs much less is twice as good (or in this case twice as fast). I'll definetely need to check this out, as long as their service is reliable......my soul is theirs! lol

I'd guess that Fios must be in or will be coming to your area soon.

I heard Fios was not going to get to urban location for a long time. It's because it's easier to change lines on poles and in rural location, in the city that much harder to rewire the whole place underground. I might be wrong

It's wonderful to live 22k feet away from the CO and in an area where there is the bare minimum of competition...

For people who fly Southwest Airlines, you can sign up for Earthlink here and get 8 Rapid Rewards credits. That's half way to a free round-trip ticket for those not familiar with their frequent flyer program. The cable is $29.99/month for the first 6 months. I'm not sure how much the DSL is since I don't qualify.

They'll give you $19.99/month plus $75 cash back and a free modem(plus shipping). That's where I signed up. I've gotten all the rebates.
If you've already signed up with Comcast for a higher-priced plan, don't they have a 30 day right of rescission?
If so, you may be able to use that fact to leverage your way into the lower priced option.
Might be worth a try for anyone with "buyer's remorse".

Unfortunately, here in Boise, Idaho, the only two choices are Qwest DSL, or Cable, and Cable is too expensive unless you have Cable TV as well (which is also more than dish or directtv.

Does anyone know how much comcast costs after 6 months? And also can you cancel after 6 months or do you have to have a year contract?

We have this in my area it's 40 a month (I think) for 10 megs. It's a fiber optic network.

I think it's 42.50 if you have cable, and 54 if you don't. It tells you in the OP link.

Hey Ridefree. Quite the picture.. Shows you can fit a bike into a car if you really want to.
Kind of looks like my dads van after we hit a 2000lb steer while we were going 65mph.

Wish I could cancel and resign up, but to get deals you have to wait 3 or 6 months....

Glad to hear it. I should get my SBC service activated within a week.
Switching to them instead of my building's "recomended" provider.

Comcast is $19.99 for first six months and then jumps to $42.95 in Maryland. It may be slower but I'm leaning towards Verizson's $20 / month DSL.
