Anyone have experience in the NYC area from Optimum Online and RoadRunner? I got RR but am getting charged $50+ for the service. Was thinking to go with Optimum for $29.99. I was wondering if the speed was the same/better, and what about the packet loss? Basically if the speed/service is not so good with Optimum, I'll stick with RR. Not worth saving $20 a month for a bunch of headaches.
I'll try...
Take the Mbit # and divide by 8192 (that's 1024 * 8). For DSL multiply your result by .85 since there's a little overhead associated with it.
So, a 3Mbit DSL connection would be 3,000,000 / 8192 = ~366KB/sec. Multiply that * .85 to get realistic #'s, so 366 * .85 = 311KB/sec is probably what you'd get.
Cable doesn't tend to have that hit, but cable does tend to fluctuate wildly if people on your node do a lot of uploading (think P2P) or if the node is simply near capacity.
Speed is what you want if you're a surfer or downloader. Low ping, low latency, and no packetloss is what matters for most gamers.
