The only thing that seems shady about ripplehost is that the password fields are all input type=text instead of type=password, so your passwords get typed out in a plain text field (instead of *'s or similar.) And all over non-SSL lines. That's very poor security. I wonder if the admin has plans to fix that...

You might want to send an e-mail to the admin (alan@splashhost.com I think is his e-mail)

I have had good luck with addaction.net with the 6 months free and then 6.95 a month after that, with 500MB, 10GB, and Cpanel. I have had responses to my problems within a couple of hours, and they have fixed any of the problems I have created. My site has not been down to my knowledge and the average load time has been .14 which is good for a php-nuke site. Just my couple of cents. I always get leary when the price is too low.

once I have my domain name and ripplehost setup,
I can have 5 email addresses and use outlook for them?
and the 100 megs are for the site and email together right?

rasputinj - I agree that AddAction.net is 1000000 better than RippleHost.com or Blinx.net esp considering everything you get, 500MB, 10GB bandwidth, 50 e-mail, PHP, MySQL, Perl, Shopping Cart, true 24/7 tech support and best of all auto installers! Their current 6 MONTHS FREE WEB HOSTING offer ($9.95 setup fee, 30 days money back guarantee) is awesome.

Rossman,

Thanks for the tip on ripplehost. I'm sure it won't be $4.99 a year for long, but so far it looks like a good setup (aside from the clear-text password thing mentioned above.)

It'd be nice if they allowed ssh and/or telnet shell access as well, but for $4.99/year, I guess that's asking for a little too much.

I've been with www.below10host.com for 3 yrs. I can email them at 2am and they'll respond within an hour. During normal business hours, they respond within 20 mins. Never had a problem with them. they have plans from $4.95/month on up to $9.95 [hence the below10 name]

RossMAN,
Wondering if you could give a little more info on the auto installer thing you mentioned. I've been with dixiesys for a year or so now and they're starting to head another way in their business , and I want some more space for my site, so I'm thinking of switching... not to mention my church has been wanting to have me put up a site page for announcements/calendar and such so this might be a great deal.

I am a former Dixiesys customer and have loved AddAction so far except for a few hiccups (which weren't their fault), no web hosting company is perfect but they have kept me very happy.

They use the cPanel control panel vs Dixiesys's Ensim and Plesk.

Here is what their bluetrix cPanel looks like, I love it. All the vital statistics are in the lower left showing how many email accounts are left, databases, bandwidth used, etc.

Regarding the bluetrix cPanel with auto installers, well here is what the auto installers look like. With a few clicks you can auto install any of those scripts listed, the scripts are updated by the developer every now and then, old scripts removed, new scripts added.

If you have any other questions please do not hesitate to ask.

I don't think this deal is that hot because it is $1/month with a $12/year fee, so you're paying $24/year for this. The $5/year hosting is much better IMO

I'm at Dixie right now (and I'll probably pick up a mini-reseller when they have another sale in the future, but I'll check out AddAction.net), so I'm not looking for ultra-bottom pricing. But, even if I were, I'm not sure I can even begin to understand the business model of a $5/yr hosting based upon their offering (or even $10/yr). Assume 100 users at $10/yr is $1000. That's less than $100/month INCOME. Assuming the machine itself was free, the cost of maintaining the machine, electricity, and BW charges eat most, if not all of that. Even if it's 10x oversold, it's still close to operating at a loss even without failures.

I'd love for someone to show some real numbers on how this even comes close to breaking even, let alone makes enough $$ for it to be worthwhile.

Welcome to AddAction.net, the autoinstaller scripts are easy, if you have any problems with it, like I did with PHP-nuke they can help you out. if you install the phpbb check out phpbb.com or if you intstall phpnuke start with nukecops.com you can get a great deal of help from those sites.

When a field is designated as a password field, the *s that replace whatever's typed into the field is purely client side. When the form is submitted, whether the field is a text or password, it's still insecure if the page isn't a secure page (SSL).

In other words: it's a purely cosmetic thing and doesn't reduce security.

With all due respect, I appreciate your attempt to sound knowledgeable, but, well, you're wrong.

"Security" doesn't just mean encryption. A password field is more secure than a text field BECAUSE of the fact that it cannot be as easily shoulder surfed. What good is encryption on the wire if someone can plainly see my password in my browser when I type it? Yes, they can also look at my keystrokes if they're really sharp. But the plain fact is that a password field helps limit the number of prying eyes that can see the text being typed, so it's more secure.

Anyone who seriously believes that "you get what you pay for" doesn't belong in the Hot Deals forum. A "deal" is, by definition, getting something of high value for a lower price, right?

So by your definition, if there was a hosting company that charged $100 a month, but kept 99% of it as profit, then you'd be getting a "good deal" on web hosting?

Sounds like the best deal so far. But I have 2 questions about the service.

1. What is the uptime? (How often are they down?)
2. How fast are the servers? What are the real-world transfer speeds? Meaning, will someone with a Cable internet download at the same speeds as someone with a T3 line? Will the bottleneck be your connection to the net or the server?

I think e-rice is still better. $9.95 a year. 3GB/month. If you insist on paying $5 a month, hence $60 a year. You can get more than 5GB/Month from rice.
