A quick note though.... It does have two extra features, and that is support for IDE raid 0,1 and 5, and it can share ISO images of cd-roms.... but with only 1 HD on the base setup... can't do RAID.... we are getting ripped off...

Anyone know the rpm speed of the HD, 5400rpm or 7200rpm. Are the discs usually user replaceable in these products. I've never had a NAS before but this deal is prompting me to get one.

I doubt spindle speed will matter... The bottleneck of this NAS will be your 100Mbit network connection.

5400 might even be better in this case (less heat) since throughput is limited by the fast ethernet speed as Braxus pointed out.

Just bought this. Seems fairly decent but there are two SERIOUS issues with it that I've found.

1. It works only with IE browsers. If you use Mozilla you get a "403 Forbidden - Current version only supports "Internet Explore 5.0" or above".
2. If you apply the MS04-004/Q832894 IE6SP1 patch, it breaks the login and you'll get a DNS error page.

So if you want this to work, you'll need use an IE based browser and not install Q832894.

On a side note, these guys come with a 7200RPM drive. The unit mine came with was a IBM/Hitachi 180GXP (IC35L120AVV207-0).

Upon more research (well HTTP headers ) found that the generic maker is Magic Control Technologies.

Supposedly you can stick a 300GB drive in and it'll work. Will void your warranty though.

The concept is right, but Review is so-so.

There should release it as kit so prosumer can add HD themselves, like the USB/firewire enclosure.

There is concern about default setting of FTP and other security issue. See it yourself

I thought that was the review to the same drive in Fry's ad but another post said that was for the NAS model.

That review is of their ASAP unit which has a built in firewall. The problems youre describing are with their firewall implementation. THis is only a NAS unit, so its up to your present firewall to handle security well. My SonicWall does
