This is kind of warm:
Proffesional work station from Compaq - Dual PIII Xeon 933 with Dual Monitor Video Card for 999
Here is the link

Thanks for the tip - If you already have your own video card you can get it for $840
I have seen that card for around 110 at buy.com
enjoy

That would be $840 without the G450, by the way. The dualhead G450 can be had for $70 to $80, assuming anyone wants one.

A better deal is had by deleting the video card option altogether.
That brings the price down to $840. This includes your choice
of Win2K or NT4, an 18Gb 10K hard drive and 512mb or RDRAM PC600.
And, of course, dual PIII 933 processors.

A bit of searching seems to indicate this uses the Intel 840 chipset.
That is a GREAT dual processor chipset: Dual memory channels, very
fast, very stable. For a server this is a WAY better chipset than
any VIA/AMD dual processor chipset...and for a workstation this
is way better than any Serverworks chipset (since it supports
AGP Pro 4x and has high quality IDE channels).

This is an EXCELLENT deal on a dual processor name brand workstation
with these specs. Note that the Xeons are just a marketing gimmic.
These Xeons are identical to standard PIII 933 processors except
they use the slot 2 configuration (and cost more if you buy them
separately).

I'd say this is pretty hot for those of us looking for something like it. It's brand name, it carries Compaq's warranty, and it has good components. The motherboard in there is quite good and the dual PIII933s are more than sufficient for a nice server/workstation. It's all good and for $840, I think it's a steal.

I just don't know how much tax and shipping would come out to in this case.

As for the card, it's not just about the dual-head. Really, Matrox does dual-head the best, but their cards just don't cut it anymore. Their last good card was the G400 Max, which was about three years ago.

Hot deal! Too bad the case is ugly...

I wonder if I call up IBM they'll offer me a similar system for a similar price.

Dude i agree 110% percent with you 110%. I know the Athlons are faster specially the MP
but we are looking at a cheap price.
You must admit - it is pretty good
If you can find the same config on a brand name machine with Dual Athlons, by all means
please post it - I would be one to jump it

In any case
thanks for the imput

HeHe...that's one of the most naive remarks that I have seen post in quite a while. The Xeon core components run at full bus speed while their Pentium III counterparts run at one-half the external bus speed. Also the availability of large L2 cache in Xeons multiplies thier overall performance as much as 5x their rated clock speed. Xeons also have the ability to address up to 64GB of ram as apposed to the 2GB limit on the Pentium III. When was the last time that you saw and engineering workstation using a standard pentium CPU. If you are wanting gaming or home system then this is not your unit.

If you're looking for raw speed, it doesn't take a brain surgeon
to figure out that dual 1.5ghz AMD processors are going to pack
more juice than dual 933Mhz Intel processors. HOWEVER, if stability
and reliability are worth something, then the Intel 840 based
motherboard has it all over the VIA chipsets that support AMD.

<<It's brand name>>

A Compaq tho....

Anyway, it is a good deal if you are looking for a dual processor machine...

I have a G450 myself....works OK, but my Abit mobo doesn't seem like it too much.

GetReal: These are NOT the "real" Xeons...you know, the ones that
come with between 512kb and 2mb of full speed on-die cache.

These are the I-dunno-why-they-even-exist Xeons that are standard
PIII 256mb cache chips in a slot 2 package. That's why I call them
"fake" Xeons. The other Xeons, the real ones (which top out at
700Mhz, incidentally) are DEFINITELY superior to standard PIII processors
for many apps...

Yah Kwad I know, I was just jerking your chain (no offense) , The 133FSB PIII Xeons or "fake Xeons as you call them also draw way too much current = way too much heat. At 490W, you WILL see a difference in your electical bill with one of these machines in your home.

EF: Try turning off javascript in your browser... that should fix it... There's some javascript crud in at the site that screws up my browser (netscape 4.61) too. :disgust:

BTW, here's a Link to the spec sheet on the system.

Walay,
Photoshop and Illustrator don't make much use of multi-processors, so a faster single processor would be better for you. The big thing to think about is RAM. Lots of it and fast, that's gonna be the bottleneck for you.

<< Athlon MP vs Xeon >>

Let's not compare peaches and apples. We're not talking about a $3K system here...Also, not everyone necessarily needs the very best out there.

<< Hot deal! Too bad the case is ugly... >>

The case is pretty ugly in the pic, though not so terrible in real life. It is kinda ugly, but at the same time it's also kinda interesting as well. Quality-wise, it's not bad. I would like one of those black IBM cases much better though...If anyone is able to get IBM or even Gateway to give a competitive price, let us know.

How much ram is alot? or enough?

I currently have 512MB of Crucial DDR2100, and 32k Raid-0 Strip(is this a good setup?)
and will have a single 1900xp cpu..
do i need more ram?

It seems like this is a great deal, considering it comes with windows 2000 professional as well. I am surprised to see the level of hesitation with it though, I think this is a better deal then the 6400-
