Walay, your specs will be more than fine for what you need.

Why are you peoples above reitterating "yeah, if you need a dual monitor setup"? I have a G450 at home with (2) 17" and just got a G450 for work with (2) 17" LCD's. I would or could never go back to one (simple) monitor, no matter how big it is. The increased productivity and enjoyment is sure hard to beat. Sorry to get off topic, as you can see from the number of posts I usually don't post gibberish. Just had to get that out, whoa I tell ya. . .

I have one of these at work. Very stable, very fast. Comes with 800mhz ram.

The power supply is 400 or 450 watts, output! You can run like 6 10,000rpm HD and other stuff on it and it still stable. Very quiet, the CPU uses well place and designed heatsinks - no fan.

The lower model, AP550 with P3-733 and 375 watt PS sells for $550+ on Ubid, refurbished! My company got the AP750 for $5000-$6000 about a year ago.

Just get it without a video card and throw in a Geforce TI-200 in and and you gonna rock!

This system is SCSI and EIDE, throw in a few more drives have have a Raid set up.

PS. The case is the best looking case out of all the case I seen. Very very high quality, I wanted to buy JUST the case and powersupply and it was $450! from compaq.

<< It seems like this is a great deal, considering it comes with windows 2000 professional as well. I am surprised to see the level of hesitation with it though, I think this is a better deal then the 6400-

This deal is smoking Hot. I'm only keeping this for myself if I can turn one around for double the price. I know some traders that love Compaq workstations. Thanks Anandtech...again.

Just install a ultra 64mb ddr or geforce 3.
you be set for another 3 to 5 years.

Install XP or me you got your self a kick azz system.

I like Compaq better then dell from my experience dell has to long hold times and send refurbs to replace defect.

Don't know how quite this baby is but I know its quitter then my Pentium 4.

A heads up on this system.... I work for Compaq Direct. We have built a ton of these. Although they are being phased out by the newer EVOs we still make em. The memory boards on these have about a 33% failure rate when we build em! Take it for what it is worth but when it won't post and a nice yellow led is all you see don't say I didn't warn ya

Don't get me wrong, contrary to what you may hear about Compaq's desktops, the servers [and most of the workstations] are among the best out there.

Since this PC comes with a 3 year warranty, I wouldn't worry about any failure rate. Compaq would take care of you.

Sorry to get back to you so late - The Version 6.0 from photoshop - as far as i Know has the plug in to use the second processor on a dual processor setup

in theory you should benefit of the power when using Photoshop - also - If you use Linux - you have a Super Machine

Damn, if only I hadn't bought this Compaq Presario...
Dual 933 w/ NT 4.0 and W2K...even the SCSI HD is worth something.
I love the case...

I wonder if I should just get it...

Come on you guys. Either you understand that this deal is smoking
hot or you don't. Can I knock off the warranty/etc? Not likely.
Will I be able to sell this for twice what I pay? Not likely?
Is this a flaming hot deal for anyone interested in a dual
processor 933Mhz machine with on-board U160 SCSI, a 18Gb 10K
hard drive, 512Mb Rambus on a very fast and very stable dual channel
motherboard? Without any question whatsoever.

If you are the kind of person who thinks "hmmm...I can get a 1.7Gb
PIV or AMD machine for around the same price, and I don't think dual
933Mhz processors will add up to 1.7Gb" then this machine is not for
you. It is for people who understand how much better a dual
processor machine responds in most environments, who understand
how much better a 10K SCSI drive based machine operates than and
IDE based machine in many environments, and who are not taken in
by "my processor speed is bigger than yours" hype.

You know which person you are. And if you're the latter, you know
how hot this deal is.

I understand that this is reasonably hot but whta is making me hesitate in investing in a dying architecture. I love dually systems scsi etc and have learned thtat to the right user they are gold. However with the release of the new amd mpx based boards I have having trouble justifying pouring money into a dying archetecture. If only the mobo's supported higher cache Xeons.

Well, it all depends on your perspective. Yes, this is the end
of the road for the 840 chipset, you won't be able to upgrade
the processors any further, etc.

On the other hand, how many apps exist that will break the back of a dual
933Mhz system? A few high end video rendering apps (how many of
us are running Maya?) Maybe a handful of interactive games.
Or, if you load it with Linux, then some
scientific apps and whatnot can tax the processors no matter what
you're running.

I'd say you get a lot of clear sailing with this
system, that is, before your desire to upgrade would be based on
anything more than processor envy. IMHO.

I am not arguing it is not a powerful system but Divx encoding and since you mentioned it Maya as well as Softimage and other sucks programs are always looking for more power.

That being said however, I must concur that for anyone in the market for this kind of system it is a phenominal deal.

<< Cant you upgrade the intel motherboard ?

so you people have better system down the line.
>>

The SP750 and most Compaq equipment use propriatary components in their equipment. The montherboard also does not have a standard Intel I/O layout so you would have to replace the I/O shield if you replaced the motherboard. That being said, the SP750 has one of the best cases in the industry next to the IBM Intellistation 6866 series. There is plenty of room to add additional storage and the motherboard is installed on a tray that can easily removed without any tools.

As GetReal said, this is a very well constructed machine. Not
cheap in any sense. Very comparable, both in components, construction
and performance, to the competing HP Kayak XU800. To buy a comparable
quality case and power supply, if one were even available
commercially, would probably cost you $200-300 at discount.

Also, as GetReal correctly stated, Compaq uses proprietary motherboards.
So if you buy one of these, do not expect to upgrade the MB down
the line. You might be able to do it, but it wouldn't be pretty.

I have both the SP750 and the XU800, and I like the XU800 a bit
more because it's somewhat smaller, better looking on the outside,
and somewhat quieter. But the SP750 is nothing to sneeze at.

I've been thinking real hard about this compaq xeon system. I could build a dual AMD XP 1700, Tyan MP, 512 Mb DDR, 18 Gb U160 SCSI, SCSI Controller, Intel 10/100/1000
Ethernet, 52x CDrom, for about $1,375 plus my time to build the system. So I have to ask myself is it better to spend $475 more for a "very powerful" system or
should I just get the already built compaq workstation that has a 3yr warranty? I do wish the compaq system had 800 Mhz RDRAM rather than the PC600 stuff.
