how would a workstation like this, really any dual proc system, fair in gaming? i'm talking about games like quake, unreal, half life....the biggies.

if you put a GF3 500 in here how would it compare to a 2 gig p4 or a 1900xp SINGLE PROCESSOR SYSTEM? how about a dual athalon system? anyone know?

much appreciated,
gew

I have been looking at this for sometime. I do a lot of multitasking. Usually running photoshop, illustrator, cakewalk, a couple of IE windows, and outlook. THis seems like a great deal !! I wish I had the money to get this. I do feel somewhat hestiant especially since these xeons aren't the "real" onces. Anyplease I can go to see how much of a performance hit I will see? I realize that having dual PIII 933 is extremely powerful for this price, but I am just curious.

(as for the ebay auction ... that is some hike up. I just feel like putting an auction selling the link to compaq for it at $999 or what if I just shamelessly linked the site in the title of a fake auction If I see a lot of these show up at ebay, I think I will do it )

Well since most games are not multithreaded (Quake3 Arena is one of the very rare exceptions), this system would function more like a uni-processor P3-933.

So it'd still be real fast for games, but down the road the Athlon XP 1900+ will fare better.

(the ebay bid was cancelled ?!?)

What about running a Counter-strike or UT server?

1) Dual processors are labeled as SMP. SMP enable apps and games are nt 4, win2k, xp pro, quake 3, photoshop, maya, 3dsmax, etc. Check with the app or game to see if it is programmed for SMP.

2) The best values on this PC are the Case, Power Supply, 18GB drive and the 2 CPUs. The case isn't sold separately. The PSU is powerful and designed to power a ton of crap.

You could build a rival to this PC using AthlonMP dualies, but to get similar features you're probably going to exceed the $999 price. When building your own, you don't get the Compaq warranty. It's quite helpful on machines of this caliber.

1 2ghz P4 running photoshop is slower than 2 P3-933 running photoshop. In other words, if the software is coded to utilize SMP, then it will smoke the P4.

I checked out Tekbargains and they have a link to get a dual capable Poweredge server from dell for $661. While this is good, the dell comes with 1 processor and a 1 year warranty. I think this machine is highly worth it for those of you not into building your own computers.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think Half Life or UT is coded for SMP. Therefore a server would only use 1 of the processors.

Does this use drive mounting rails? if so does it come with them for all the bays?

The SP750 does not use drive rails. One thing to note however, is that the SP750 like all Compaq equipment uses Torx type screws so you will need to Buy a 4-40 Torx screw driver if you do not already have one. I actually prefer the Torx screws as they provide a secure scredriver fit and and will the Torx screwdriver will not slip when you are tightening screws inside your unit.

Another nice feature of the SP750 that I have never seen in any other computer is that it has a small metal plate plate just under the internal drive bays that stores all the extra screws (24 I think) needed to mount any devices that you may want to add to the unit. Whenever you need to add a new drive or other internal device, you simply unscrew the needed extra screws from the plate.

Buying something to sell on ebay for a profit is not wrong. Once you purchase something you can do whatever you want with it.

I have a job. I keep some items, but at this time of year, all the stuff I buy is to get more presents for my family and friends.

Anyway, I don't need to prove anything to a troll.

Apparently the memory type is PC800 RDRAM and not PC600. That would be good news!
