Wow what a racket. Here's our clearance item but we added a few things to it so now it costs more than before we put it on clearance.

God damn. I wish I lived within an hour of a Best Buy. I desperately need a new laptop and this is so unbelievably good. I was pretty much going to try to get something similar but slightly lower in power but this is just amazing at the price. Severely doubt I would be able to get there in time to pick one up tomorrow morning. Damn.

I had a $400 budget for a new laptop for the gf - so I headed to Best Buy @ 44th/5th in NYC

Asked a fat (race withheld) blue shirter about the laptop, response "6862 ... we're all sold out"

I was disappointed and nearly walked out

Turned around, went to a kiosk - and viola, said that they had them in stock

Went back to the fat f*** and asked him if he was sure & if any other stores had any

He didn't say a word and walked off

Stood around behind the counter sneaking glances at me - I kept looking at him

He disappears and reappears a while later with the laptop

As he rings me up "So what price did you see this at?"

I answered "At a clearance price"

Total after tax was $560

Less IR $460

Less Gift Card $400

Walked out with a big happy smile on my face

So I went to one Best Buy right when they opened today, spoke with a salesperson who checked the computer and said they had the laptop in stock, and then waited for 15 minutes while he went to "find" it and to talk with a bunch of other employees.

When he came back, he told me they didn't have any in the store and told me to go to another store.

I went to the other store, and they had the laptop -- but it had the dumb $129 Norton + Geek Squad software package. I bought one anyways using the $100 High-Speed Internet Discount. (Total $576.25)

I figure in spite of the junk software that I still got a good deal, right?

Ok, so they have 2 in Concord,NH and will hold one for me at $533.99, BUT they have customized these 2 already and that adds another $159 to the price for a total of $692.99.....UNBELIEVEABLE...

They say they added antivirus and whatever else.
It's like buying a new car, that the dealer has detailed the car and up'd the price.

Anyone else hear of this going on and is there anything I can do about it?

Went to BB this morning and they had three in stock for $625.
I was able to get them to pricematch to $524 but when we went to ring it up, they informed me that the $100 HIS discount could not be applied to the pricematched total.
I decided to pass.

Found a few at the BB by me, but was wesitant because the HSI seems like a real contract.

1st Screen: Checked for availability
2nd Screen: Personal Info (SS#, Birthdate, Driver License) + Legal Agreement
3rd Screen: Contact Info
4th Screen: Pick a date for service ACTIVATION

(Displayed Verizon throughout the whole process)

The legal agreement and the fact that it asked to pick from one of 6 dates for ACTIVATION made me reconsider...I thought they'd call to schedule activation (as posted above).

It's a great deal without the $100 off, but is so much sweeter with it.

Did anyone go through a similar HSI process?

This process seems like a real contract? Did everybody have to go through this? I find it hard to believe that you give them all this personal information and when they call you to activate, you just tell them you found a better deal or provider...or make up some other BS.

Store near me just has the display model left, I called and it was $525 but when I asked about the $100 off after signing up with a HIS (High Speed Internet) offer, they said they couldn't take it off because the laptop was already clearance.

Seattle area not so not. All Bellevue has are customized. Northgate has some but they are 601.00 and the idiot said that's as low as they go as it's the way the clearance system works.

Also Bellevue requires clearwire and northgate requires qwest

Update:
This may interest Boo Boo and anyone else in the Seattle area.

Went to the Marysville BB and they had a few left (@ $524), but they were all "upgraded" by the Geek squad to get rid of the trialware garbage etc. (which supposedly increases the speed/performance by 30% and includes an alternate recovery disk). Of course this jacked up the price another $60 ($584 total).
I told the salesperson I didnt require the fixes and could have done it myself, so he agreed to fore go the comcast offer and just knock off the price of the Geek squad fixes.
I got one for $524 including the fixes/recovery disc and did not have to bother with the HSI offer.

I went to two other BB's here in the N.NJ area and the HSI process was the same as I described earlier. The prices for the laptop were also different...some $555 and others $599.

All the floor guys said it was a binding contract for 1 yr. depending on the HSI package and provider.

Still curious to know what others experienced with the HSI sign-up.

This might have to do with the service provider u chose ttran4. I chose broadband service from cox (comcast equivalent) and all they took was my name, address and phone #. No SS#, no credit check, no signing of any contracts. Also based on the paperwork I was given this does not look like a binding contract in any way.

I think that's the difference...Other than the spash screen showing the other providers, it didn't allow me to choose providers. It just selected Verizon and proceeded from there. I guess I'm lucky I didn't continue and go through with it or they'd be knocking at my door Monday morning.

Awesome deal. Got the notebook for $460 at the Frisco, TX store. When I applied for the $100 discount, I chose the Time Warner deal. Didn't require my SS#, drivers license, etc. Just a phone number and address.. I didn't have to sign anything either. Haven't had anyone call me yet though.. Thinking about calling them to make sure it doesn't actually go through. Notebook is really realy nice though.

I got the notebook for $425 + tax at the Reading, PA store. I used a copy of the HSI coupon that I printed off the computer and it worked fine.

I tried to get in on this deal but the Normal, IL store was sold out. I asked them to search other stores and see if they could get me one but the price was $599 and it would have taken a week or 2 for them to get it. So No Joy for me on the deal, but on a side note something very peculiar happend to me while I was at the store.

As I was walking in I spotted a very cute (Im guessing college) girl comming out and she was giving me the eyes and smiling pretty hard as she passed me in the parking lot, so I gave her a nod just to let her know I appreciated the gifts that God had bestowed upon her. I entered the store and messed around for a few trying to get a sales guy and finding out that I would not be getting a laptop today. So I proceeded to the parking lot and to my suprise she was sitting in the hot lil red convertible (with the top down) next to my beat up honda. In the passenger seat was another very attractive girl, she was eating gummy bears LOL.......as I passed they both perked up and smiled saying hi and cheesing like erm......school girls. I said hi and waved giving a lil smile and preparing to enter my vehicle, before I could enter the passenger shouted out asking me if I wanted a gummy bear........me being the frugal guy that I am and surely never wanting to turn down a free treat accepted the invitation and moved in closer for a little 1 on 2 chit chat......hehehe. So we talked for a few and had a couple laughs. Now, at this point you'd probably be rooting for me to grab some numbers and jet like a theif in the night, but unfortunately Im in a 3yr relationship and I hope to make it a few more years or maybe indefinate. So, I politely ended the convo and made my way home.

But just for future reference, when searching for a hot deal, keep your eyes open you might find something that wasnt listed in the OP.

You guys shouldnt sweat the activation thing, from slick deals, everyone had no problems canceling this.
So far comcast, verizon, time warner, no issues.

TW called me this morning, wife told them i changed my mind, they apologized for disturbing us.
btw i already have tw high speed.

vonkhan, i had the same fat bastard "help" me. He is barely literate.
he disappeared for 15 min to get the laptop, even though there were about 7 or so on the sales floor.

Yep, 64bit was uber smooth.
I had bought a Lenovo R61i with a 2.4ghz cpu and 3 gigs of RAM, 250gig hd a few months before but with Vista 32bit and you can just tell it runs slower than the Gateway did.
