Now honestly...I am upgrading from a Compaq X1000 (not really an upgrade, but just going to a smaller, lighter laptop).

1. How does the Dell 700m rank with Compaq?
2. How good or bad (reliability) is the 700m

So, how many are buying to resell???

I want to check out a 700m, play with it for a little while. But I really have no use for another lappy. I'm happy with my work-provided X40

Dell Inspiron 6000
Intel® Pentium® M Processor 730 (1.60 GHz/2MB Cache/533MHz FSB)
Microsoft Windows XP Professional
15.4 inch UltraSharp WSXGA+ LCD Panel
1Yr Ltd Warranty, 1Yr Mail-In Service, and 1Yr Technical Support (my CitiBank VISA offers free 1 year extended warranty)
256MB Shared DDR2 SDRAM 1 Dimm - I'll upgrade this from NewEgg or AT FS/FT
60GB Hard Drive
6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery (53 WHr)

$1,502 base price as configured above (excluding current promotional discounts)
-$750 off $1499 coupon
=========================
$752

I would like the better warranty and battery but I'd also like to keep this as close to $1499 as possible.

What's the difference between the different VGA screens?
(my 6000 config is on the first page)

It's a very noticeable difference. You're best off visiting your local CompUSA or Best Buy to compare WXGA and WSXGA resolutions side by side for yourself. For me the WSXGA resolution is the best of both worlds. I don't have perfect 20/20 eagle eye's vision (WUXGA won't work) and I hate huge blocky icons/text ... so the WSXGA is a nice middle ground.

Unofficial Dell Inspiron 6000 FAQ with detailed specs, pictures, comparisons, etc.

Any feedback is appreciated
rest of specs:
Microsoft Windows XP Professional
512MB Shared DDR2 SDRAM 1 Dimm
60GB Hard Drive
24X CD Burner/DVD Combo Drive
Dell® Wireless 1450 Internal Wireless (802.11a/b/g, 54Mbps)
9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery (80 WHr)
Services and Support Options 2Yr Ltd Warranty, 2Yr At-Home Service, and 2Yr Technical Support

Very nice config and remember to pay for your laptop with a premium VISA, MasterCard or Amex cc which offers 1 free year extended warranty coverage (if your card is eligible). Which cc do you plan on using (VISA/MC/AMEX)?

This is the config I ordered:

Intel® Pentium® M Processor 750 (1.86 GHz/2MB Cache/533MHz FSB)
17 inch UltraSharp? Wide Screen UXGA Display with TrueLife?
1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz 2 Dimm
256MB NVIDA® GeForce? Go 6800
60GB 7200rpm Hard Drive
Microsoft Windows XP Professional
8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer write capability
6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery (53 WHr)
9-cell Lithium Ion Additional Battery (80 WHr)
Dell Wireless 350 Bluetooth Internal(2.0 + Enhanced Data Rate)
Intel® PRO/Wireless 2915 Internal Wireless (802.11 a/b/g, 54Mbps)
Integrated 10/100 Network Card and Modem

I used the $800 off $1999 coupon...still cost a lot, but I don't need to upgrade anything myself.

I'm going to try and configure something close to this in the morning if the coupon comes out. If it is better, then I'll cancel

Kanuckistan!!! first i heard! ROFL!!!

and for teh 4200>7200rpm performance question, i just now upgraded my old latitude at work here from 4200 to a seagate momentus 5400 and i think its night and day. 7200 will be awesome, but that's for my T42...

I think I'm going to get a 6000 for my father. I would love to get him the 700m, but the resolution on that thing is insane and would cause too much stress for my father's eyes. Thankfully the 6000 comes with a WXGA screen and offers the other screens with higher resolutions as an option.

Anyone know what the mobile chips equate to in terms of a desktop p4?

ie
1.6m = xghz p4?
1.8m = xghz p4?

I wanna game on the 9300 so just wondering if its worth going to 2.0m?
