Thanks.

I would keep it as close as possible to the base configuration, maybe go for the 60GB hard drive or one of the better displays.

Keep the undiscounted price near $1500 to keep the discount at the magical 50% point.

Agreed.

Go for the least amount of RAM, as RAM is cheaper elsewhere and VERY easy to install.

But Dell's doing free upgrades for RAM right now. For the 600m I spec'd, upgrading from 256 (1 dimm) to 512 (1 dimm) is only $21 more. I doubt you can find a 256MB stick of RAM for less than $21. Doing the same on the 8600 was only $45 more. Same with the 5160.

Talk you out of it?

Hmm.

You want a Panasonic Toughbook Y2.

14.1" SXGA+ TFT
Built in DVD/CD-RW or DVD burner, NOT external
Hard drive cushion/suspension for fall protection
3.3 to 3.4lbs!!!
Ultra-light AC adapter

It's an ultraportable with an attitude, lighter than many 12.1" models.

I was wondering about the 8-cell battery on the 700m too. Looked around and found a small pic of it here (scroll down a bit, not a great pic tho).

Depends on your needs. The 8600 is a better laptop overall. The 600m is more portable since it's smaller, and just over a lb lighter.

Damn damn... this is gonna be a sweet deal. But I hate Dell build quality. Owned a Inspiron 8000 and god the build quality on that notebook was just HORRIBLE. Got an IBM A31p a couple years later and it seems like very few companies can touch IBM in notebook durability.

So question for all you folks that have jumped on recent deals... How does Dell's build quality compare now? Still squeeky, flimsy, mouse drift, cheap keyboard feel, etc.?

If you wanna build quality, go with IBM, at least you won't have to talk to some morons in India if the thing breaks.... sorry, make it when the thing breaks.

Their low-end models seem to be built very poorly. The 600m model and higher ones seem to have a slightly better build qualtiy/feel from what I've seen.

This seems to be the best "performing" setup posted so far. I dont think a 600m should be in the equation for anyone, either 8600,9100, 700m.

Go for:

Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 3GHz with HT Tech, 15.4-in WUXGA ?

OR

Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 3.20GHz with HT Tech, 15.4-in WSXGA+ ?

I do not need high ass resolutions like anything over 1024 or so. Who likes staring
at small things?

Thanks.

LOL so true. That's where IBM shines, if something breaks you tell them, they send the part. No questions asked (at least from my experience). With Dell... "Can you try xxx. oh? that didn't work? try xxx. oh still not working? Can you hold? .... .... .... .... [Now thinking to self, "damn I probably know more than you do. Just send me the damn replacement part!"] Try xxx now. oh? still not working? I'll need to put you on hold again while I get authorization for a warranty replacement. blah blah blah."

It's not really a 1.5ghz drop in CPU. The Pentium M (Centrino) is much more powerful, mhz to mhz, than the P4. A 1.5Ghz Pentium M will probably match a 2.4-2.5Ghz P4 in most typical applications.

You are one thread crapping mofo. You are constantly crapping threads. Noone has ever complained about the quality of Dell here. You go pay double for your IBM. Granted the are nice laptops. But double the price? Go away fanboy.

WSXGA+ should be fine... Consider this, that's 1920x1200 on a 15.4" screen. That resolution is usually reserved for 20"+ LCDs for desktops (or high end 18"). Yeah you can raise the text dpi resolution, but some programs won't let you. Also another thing to consider.... There will be NO modern game that you'll be able to run at 1920x1200 at a decent frame rate with the card that's in the notebook.

Damn why on earth do people use such a tiny resolution?
Games must look like garbage too.

Any other reasons to use this res. ?

Need to add about 80-90 bucks.....already added hard drive

What else should I add?

Thanks.
