So what shall it be?

Seagate OEM 80GB 7200rpm for 139-50=89

or

Compusa Maxtor 80gb retail 5400rpm ATA100 for $99 out the door?

What do you guys think?

The question revolves around whether you want:

a) the retail box with cable et al or
b) wait for the rebate and save money on a faster drive?

edit: Fry's sale for Seagate 80 gig now good through Tuesday Feb 26.

Buyers of Barracuda ATA IV drives may be interested in Seagate's Auto Acoustic Management utility, seaaam.exe. I found it on their site in only one place: here I disabled AAM on my Barracuda IV and seek times went down by 1ms.

edit: the utility is one of the two icons at the bottom left. The increase in noise due to the faster seeks is negligible IMO.

I scanned the rebate and put on my computer. Please print it out.

This is my home machine with a slow ADSL(128 kb) connection, so please be kind and expect delay.

Rebate Scan (200kb)

It will be up for a few days only, taking it down around 2/28

<< Well, that's really a moot question right now as the One Day Sale at Fry's is over so there's no option to buy the 80 gig at Fry's. The real question is would you have wanted:

a) the retail box with cable et al or
b) wait for the rebate and save money on a faster drive?
>>

Why is it you think this is only a one day sale? I have the Fry's circular in front of me and the only thing I see is that the prices are good 2-22 till 2-26. There was a one day sale for one region, but I don't think the HD was part of it. If it was, too bad for you. The Houston Fry's price is good through Tuesday (or when they run out).

Friday's LA Times Fry's ad listed the drive as part of their One Day Sale. Today's Times Fry's ad show the drive good as priced through Feb 26.

Do they have a fry's in Alexandria, VA? I don't think so, coz on the website they list only California, Texas, Arizona etc

I have a couple of questions: Can we buy it online or is there any chance to buy this stuff if there's no store in the town??
Is there a limit of the number of drives one can buy? or on the rebate?

You can view the Fry's ads in the Orange Country Register newspaper online at www.ocregister.com, click Newspaper ads, then Retail, and scroll list on left column. Then you can print page or individual sale items.

Title of thread should read:

...$89 + tax and after MIR.

I just bought this drive over the phone. because they normally don't ship sales items, I was pretty much forced to by a 3 year warrantee on the drive for 25 bucks. so in the end, to ship it to NYC it came out as:

149 drive
25 performance guarantee warrantee
15 shipping
-50 rebate
_____
about 140

not the hottest deal, but I really need the space, and i guess a 3 year warrantee will come in handy. (if only i had gotten my lazy butt up to get that 99$ 80 gig'er at compusa this past week)

Let me be the first to say that Fry's phone ordering service SUCKS LIKE NOTHING HAS VER SUCKED BEFORE! No less than 1 hour on the phone and I still don't know how much my final cost will be, when the item will ship, what my order number is, or if the rebate is included. All of this because no one there can speak English and everytime I get transferred, it ends up being 15 minutes of a phone ringing yet nobody picks up. I spent 15 minutes just spelling my name and address no less than 4 times each! If I can ever get through to someone today, I will be cancelling my order and vowing never to even look at a Fry's add again. West Coaster's, you can keep your Fry's, it's Newegg for me from now on.

end rant.

The girls at Fry's speak engrish. Having said that there's finally a couple hotties working down there in sunnyvale, one who gives me "the look" every now and again, making me a happy Fry's guy most of the time.

pullmyfinger - Fry's never meant to do phone orders, so be lucky that they were willing to do that for you. As far as us being lucky...yeah, Fry's has good prices, but they make up for it all in lack of service. I don't think there's one helpful person there...all they know how to do is take your money.

iwearnosox - Which girls are these at the Sunnyvale store? I think you mistaken the "look," ...they're really thinkin' you stink. j/k

I just snagged one in Burbank. $139 - 50MIR = $89. They have plenty of the printed rebate forms at checkout. Needs original receipt, not a copy.

I grabbed one tonight at the new Fry's in City of Industry (finally made the trip..nice store..not busy at all now!). They gave me one rebate form at the checkout.

As I was walking out I decided to ask for another one, since I like to keep track of rebates with extra forms. The guy rudely informed me: "We are only allowed to give out one rebate form per item purchased." I wasn't going to debate him since clearly the store is new and I'm sure the employees were freshly trained. Obviously they don't want to run out of rebate forms?

Spinn, I agree that Fry's isn't primarily a phone order business, however, their website specifically states that they take phone orders and give you exact instructions for which store, phone number, and department to contact.
Fry's Electronics does not currently sell products on-line. If you would like to purchase products over the telephone using the Telesales office at the Sunnyvale store, please call the Sunnyvale store at (408) 617-1300 and ask to speak to the Telesales department.

The manner in which my order (if it ever went out) has been handled is appauling, it's as if no one in the store had any idea that they actually have a phone ordering policy. I called last night (6th call) and asked to speak to a manager and I got transferred to some assistant manager's voice mail! I am convinced that if I walked into the Sunnyvale store, all I would see is 50 Fry's employees running around bumping into themselves because they all had their heads up their a$$es.

Pullmyfinger, it just so happens that i went to the sunnyvale store to get another one of these drives since my brother needed one and someone called the girl i was working with on the phone. I was right near the phone and she kept on telling that the person that does the phone orders isnt in and they should call back the next day. Next thing i know is that she was telling her colleague there that she didnt wanna get into the hassle of taking that order over the phone.
I wonder if it was you who was calling!

Atrac: The checkout lady could not give me a rebate form for the microwave that was OOS in Burbank, even tho I got a raincheck for it. She said she "might get caught" if she did. I guess they want to keep them for actual sales only, one-per.
