Who uses ECS? Mac or Alienware?

I hear ECS isn't bad. I know people have had some compatability problems, but those that don't are extremely happy about their board. I suppose it's not as a godo a board as asus, or abit, but it's decent, right? But I guess the point here is that it's not top notch like we'd expect all the components to be.

The Dells are good laptops, the thinkpads are built like tanks, great for the business user, who can normally thrash laptops every year or so. I used a Thinkpad a few years ago, and it was tough, handled drops like a champ. But you pay more for an IBM.

please excuse my ignorance and I don't mean to thread crap, but are IBM laptops really that much better than say Dells? I just ask because for what you get with that IBM, I just got a Dell 5160 that blows it out of the water (at least just looking at the specs you listed) for much less. I'm sure it has been explained before but what makes IBM laptops so great? Thanks

very very solid lappys, my big thing is that when abused(accidently in most cases) screens dont crack bc the unit is well designed unlike sonys

Nice
deal, except for the 128MB RAM. Anyone buying this should
consider the cost of more RAM.

Sorry, I can't stand when people keep talking about Thinkpads as if there was only one model. I have an older T series and beleive me the Titatnium line is stellar. However, to call all Thinkpads the cream of the crop is flat out wrong. This is a decent laptop with decent build quality at best. I would describe my A series book the same way. There's a VAST, VAST difference in build quality within manufacturers, tb's included. Point is this is a decent price if you're set on going Big Blue for the service and support but to assume it's a lexus based on the name as someone suggested is simply not true.

I have R40 with 14"s xga at 5.5 pounds. I think it's a nice laptop - very good build quality even though the all black case is a little bland, great keyboard (best you could get on laptops), I appreciate the track point, good screen (nothing special though), and lastly great battery life (almost 6 hours). As for performance and components, these depend on the model and options, I for example feel that my pentium-m 1.3 is a little slow. My friend just got a dell 600m which is of similar size, but it feels a lot more flimsy (case is creaking when moved), the keyboard is just ok, screen is fine, battery life is average, and there's no trackpoint. On the other hand, it has the new penium-m 1.6 dothan which feels a lot faster than my thinkpad with the 1.3, and also the case is colored silver and blue which is nice (even though it's still cheap plastic). My firend had some reservations after getting it, especially about the keyboard, but overall it was a good deal.

I used to have a Dell notebook as well. Inspiron 8000. Later moved to a IBM A31p and you just can't compare the quality. IBM build quality beats Dell. No question about it. Yes, IBM has a pretty boring design for their notebook line but it's tried, tested, and works well. You do get what you pay for and I can attest to that multiple times here.

Well, I have had an IBM 600E (366mhz), a Compaq 2145 (2400+), and now a Dell 8600 (1.6 pentium m).

The 600E is the best built, but old and slow now. The Compaq had major problems from the start, including bad battery life, HD problems, keys that don't depress, very noisy, and horrible wireless.

My new Dell is actually very very nice in my opinion. It is silent (effectively), its wireless is great, the screen is big and bright, its fast, it has a 4.5 hour battery life, etc. Now, considering it has a dvd+rw and ended up costing 800 bucks, I think it is amazing.

Anyways, I just wanted to comment since people seemed to go off on a Dell hating tangent. The build quality might not be as awesome, but considering you can get 2 dells for the price of 1 IBM, I think I know what to do. However, I do not deny the superiority of IBMs in almost all respects aside from price.

Well i can speak cuz i have BOTH, a Dell Inspirion 8000 and a IBM Thinkpad T21, Dell is flaky and mice work sporadically, not to mention battery life depreciation...
IBM OWNZ, and working for them doesnt hurt either

I have a T40 and a T42 and they are both amazing. I also use A22 and the X31 often. The big difference between IBM and Dell is that IBM spends a lot of money on usability testing and Dell does not. My girlfriend helped design a lot of the newer features on the Thinkpads and they conduct very extensive testing with users before they go out to the public. I use mostly Dell laptops at work and they do not even compare to the IBM's in my opinion.
