The appliance fits in your shirt pocket and is reliable. I take images to my photo lab on these disks and all the universities and colleges use them. Lot of people use them and have them built into their computers; others use them on their laptops. 750 mb is a lot of pages of stuff, not everyone wants to carry around a much larger device when they only need to have 100,000 pages of data on the disk.
Ecology wise it makes more sense that a use it and throw it away mentality.
