Staple's weekend flyer had the 2600n priced at $100 off the "normal" proce of $399. But when I got there to get one, they had it listed for $249 "instant savings," no rebates or other BS. This is the best deal I've ever seen on this printer, and I've been waiting for awhile.....

Have you used it?

I have the printer and prints amazingly! The text is great, its a laser printer. The color is also very good, even pictures. Obviously you cannot print photos yet with a laser, but it still does a good job.

Great deal imo!

If you're used to reading inkjet specs it is, because inkjets tend to BS their specs and have some sort of interpolation to compensate.

When it comes to lasers, the only resolutions you'll generall see are 600x600 and 1200x1200. While 12x12 is good, it's totally unnecessary for text. Regardless, I guarantee you that this printer will print text better than pretty much any inkjet out there. Photos not so much, but graphics should be decent quality.

how does this compar with the dell's? How are the consumables compare (price per page)?

also, if you don't use the color much, will the color toner dry out (like ink jet)?

You're probably better off with a refurbed Dell 3100cn, which can be had for about $240 when Dell puts them on sale (about every other week). Comes with brand new consumables: black and all color toners rated for 4000 pages. (The HP toner carts are rated for 2000 pages). The 2600n is also dirt slow for a modern laser printer, with monochrome printing rated at 8ppm (Dell is around 22ppm). And it doesn't come standard with a second paper tray (unlike the 3100cn).

(In fairness. the 2600n is a bit faster than the Dell on color graphics: 6ppm vs 4ppm, but color graphics are notably inferior to those of the Dell).

Oh, and the Dell come with a 1 year next day on-site warranty.

The only reason I could imagine for buying the 2600n would be if you like its smaller form factor (the Dell is pretty tall and heavier than the 2600n).

It works with OS X and Windows OS!

and don't forget the HP trade in program

If you have an old LaserJet 4L, you can receive $80 from HP

I've owned a 2600n before, as well as an earlier home model HP color laser printer. The Dell blows them both away in my opinion. For monochrome text the 2600n prints about as well as the Dell, but is MUCH MUCH slower. For color, the Dell is so much better, it's not even a competion. I also like the fact that a 4000 copy black toner refill for the Dell is only $50.

I never saw the quality of 3100cn. However, I hate refurb printer or copier. I bought a Dell and a Canon refurb printers before and they both gave me headache of paper jam.
I never had any paper jam issue with HP printer. (I always buy new HP printer, that might be the reason)

As my wife needs to use the printer for her iMac, we can only buy product that support both platforms. HP 2600n is a great choice especially if people had an old HP printer that qualified for the rebate. $249 - $80 is a good price (plus tax of course)

The color quality is good enough for most people. No one will use color laser for photo anyway---> inkjet or WalMart or online places like Shutterfly will be better choices.

Lets also point out that the Dell is probably twice the size of the 2600N. I own the 2600 and my friend at work owns the 3000cn. The Dell is certainly better for pictures... but printing out photos on a Laser is still not cost effective. I chose the 2600N because it's small.... fast for color and the first print is out in 15 seconds. Also the reviews of the Dell seem to generally be pretty bad and many folks seem to have trouble getting Dell to send replacements. The sheer amount of refurbs for sale on their outlet should tell you something.

I mentioned in my original post that the form factor of the Dell (high) might be an issue for some.

The HP is acceptably fast for color laser printing, but the prints are lousy. I agree that no one should expect to print out photos for posterity on ANY consumer laser printer. But if you need color for anything, it would be nice for it to be reasonably good (for laser) color. The HP doesn't, in my opinion, do reasonably good laser printer quality color. Also, the HP is just incredibly slow on monochrome for a modern laser printer. Since most printing that anyone does on a laser printer is monochrome, that speed is important.

As for refurbs: Dell refurbs are mostly just customer returns. Anything that gets returned for any reason gets resold as a refurb. If the customer opened the box, the consumables are tossed and replaced with brand new ones. If the printer was actually returned for a problem, that is fixed. I've been through a LOT of Dell refurbs and have been wholly satisfied. These are not the crappy so-called "refurbs" that you get from a place like Newegg, where "refurb" means someone else returned it (probably for a reason) and we're just gonna ship it to the next person as-is.

I have yet to read anyone complain about paper feed issues (crooked paper) with the 3100cn.

I don't know where you read all the negative reviews of the 3100cn. Most of the reviews I've read have been very positive. There are some annoying quirks, the most significant of which is that you have to change the paper type in both the printer settings and in the print dialogue.

I went to Staples to check out the 2600n. It was too big of a footprint for my needs and the cartridges are quite costly.

I chose the monochrome HP LJ 1020 instead, which rang up at $99 after instant rebate. I will stick with my inkjet when I needs color, which is not very often.
