Lets also point out that the Dell is probably twice the size of the 2600N. I own the 2600 and my friend at work owns the 3000cn. The Dell is certainly better for pictures... but printing out photos on a Laser is still not cost effective. I chose the 2600N because it's small.... fast for color and the first print is out in 15 seconds. Also the reviews of the Dell seem to generally be pretty bad and many folks seem to have trouble getting Dell to send replacements. The sheer amount of refurbs for sale on their outlet should tell you something.
I mentioned in my original post that the form factor of the Dell (high) might be an issue for some.
The HP is acceptably fast for color laser printing, but the prints are lousy. I agree that no one should expect to print out photos for posterity on ANY consumer laser printer. But if you need color for anything, it would be nice for it to be reasonably good (for laser) color. The HP doesn't, in my opinion, do reasonably good laser printer quality color. Also, the HP is just incredibly slow on monochrome for a modern laser printer. Since most printing that anyone does on a laser printer is monochrome, that speed is important.
As for refurbs: Dell refurbs are mostly just customer returns. Anything that gets returned for any reason gets resold as a refurb. If the customer opened the box, the consumables are tossed and replaced with brand new ones. If the printer was actually returned for a problem, that is fixed. I've been through a LOT of Dell refurbs and have been wholly satisfied. These are not the crappy so-called "refurbs" that you get from a place like Newegg, where "refurb" means someone else returned it (probably for a reason) and we're just gonna ship it to the next person as-is.
I have yet to read anyone complain about paper feed issues (crooked paper) with the 3100cn.
I don't know where you read all the negative reviews of the 3100cn. Most of the reviews I've read have been very positive. There are some annoying quirks, the most significant of which is that you have to change the paper type in both the printer settings and in the print dialogue.
