Thanks BBE!

Darn, i wonder if they do price matching or something. That's at least $200 cheaper than what i got (w/ tax and shipping factored in) last week plus it has ethernet built-in + Win2k.

IBMAuctions, are you there? Is there some sort of price guarantees on stuff like this?

<< Another awesome deal on a ThinkPad! Wish I could afford one right now. This is even several hundred $$ less than the one that was posted last week, and the system is better (has the ethernet combo card and come with Win2K instead of Win98). Why are they unloading them like this? Must have had a bunch of corporate orders cancelled or something?? >>

You may be right on... I work at a major corporation that has canceled a large amount of orders for that exact model (as well as several others).

Thanks For a great deal.
I just picked up a Model # 2629HSU Thinkpad.
Pentium III 850MHz,
128MB,
32GB,
8xDVD,
56K,
10/100ETH,
15inch TFT(1600X1200),
Win98SE.

$1624.00
$40.00 Overnight Shipping
$116.48 Tax
1780.48 Total

A few tips for fellow buyers:
Use the Model # listed in the auction for info from IBM.
Goto IBM Support For Thinkpads
On The left hand lower side it has a "Quick Path" box.
Enter the model # from the Ebay Auction Description Box " not from the auction title line.
Example my auction title listed a P3 700 but the model # 2629HSU shows as a P3 850.
I use the above link to get the specs for that model#(2629HSU).

An IBM email comes to the bidder after the auction with a phone # to call.
The CSR confirmed the better specs above after I told him the title of the auction listed different specs.

I will update when the unit arrives.
Check those model #'s.

Shipping Update
Just got a call from IBM @ 6:00 pm. They quoted the wrong shipping charge. Added $32.00 to the $40.00.
Since the order was delayed till I agreed to the charge they agreed to credit the shipping back to ground cost if I do not receive the unit by friday. We shall see.

Yeah, it's such a great deal that it doesn't last long. You tell two friends and they tell two friends, ... and pretty soon everyone needing a new laptop has got a kick-a$$ deal! Sweet!

I went for it and got the A21p (PIII-850, 128MB, 32GB, 15" 1600x1200, Win2K, modem+ethernet combo, DVD) for $1619. However, they wouldn't let me do the GPS deal that was mentioned in last weeks A21p thread. Bummer! Oh well, I didn't really NEED a GPS, so it's no big deal. I did pick up a 256MB SO-DIMM from Dell for $87 shipped though.

I used both the A series and T series at my last job

A Series has:
Floppy built in
Another port for removable optical drive (The T has one "Ultrabay" where you can swap out either the floppy or the optical drive, but you can't run both at the same time).
15" max screen (vs. 14.1" for the T)
bigger overall than the T: thicker and wider when closed (the overall shadow is bigger than the T) This is due in part because the speakers are on the top of the A, above the keyboard. In the T, the are down, in front.
Heavier than the T by about 2lbs. The A is more of a desktop replacement, while the T is lighter and more portable. If you want to carry one of these with you frequently, the T is way to go...but it will cost you more.

Oh, and the T has a cool, rubberized kind of finish to it, it's not shiny, slippery plastic; it's easy to grip and hold. The A has a more traditional kind of finish: hard, shiny plastic.

If it helps any, the A21P Series also has that "rubberized" finish to it on the top cover as it's also Titanium composite. The other A21's (e/m) don't.

By the way, BigBlueEdge can you post a linky to that memory module? I'm thinking of getting one too. Thanks.

Here is the link:

Link to 256MB Kingston memory at Dell

The price will show as $104 until you add it to your cart, then the 20% off will be reflected. If you buy over $100 of stuff then shipping is free too!

I was referred to this item by another ThinkPad user, so that's the only confirmation I have that this memory works in an A21p. I've got my fingers crossed.

If you have to choose between A and T-series and the sticker price does not matter, you should definitely go with a T. A-series laptops are made by Acer, and is known to be much less reliable than T-series. Corporate technical support groups do not usually recommend A-series laptops for that reason. I had a chance to experience both because I own an A20m (PIII 700) at home and my company provided me with a T22 (PIII 850). I found that T22 is a much better system in almost every aspect. But this is a great deal, and A-series is not bad at all (especially A2XP). You cannot go wrong with an A21P at $1,700!

I beg to disagree. It's the i-Series that's made by Acer. T,X and A series are definitely IBM.

As for choices, depends on how you use it. I love the T for being so light, moreso with the X but would definitely go with the A21p (at least) due to it's bigger screen and better graphics (i'm a designer by trade).

IBMAuctions, what is the standard warranty on the laptops on the ebay store? Is it the regular 1-year warranty? I could buy an extended 3-year if I opted, like any other thinkpad, right? Thanks!

From what I can figure out about the 'buy it now' auctions of new IBM hardware, they have the standard machine warranty on them. For the A21p units in question, that means a 3-year warranty on the entire unit except for the battery, which is 1 year.

But I'm not IBM, so this may be wrong.

Ugh I wish you people would STOP tempting me ... the T20 for $1309 is so tempting, is it only P3/700 or are there any faster ones?

What's the battery life like on a fully charged T20?

Keep watching eBay daily - IBM is dumping lots of these units lately. They seem to start up 'Buy it Now' auctions each day and end them within a few hours to a day or so, regardless of how many units are listed. If you're looking for a certain combination you could check completed auctions (for the auctions.ibm.com user ID) and see what they've been offering and then wait a few days until they offer it again. The best values seem to be the T20 mentioned in another thread, the A21p from this one, and another A21 series that had less disk and lower resolution, but several hundred cheaper.
