I posted a message the other day about an issue with a Dell optiplex GX150. I was having some problems and i found out the hard disk was the responsible. I wanted to determine which the cause was. This computer is used. So i thought the problem could´ve be overuse. Well. We got a new hard disk and today i installed speedfan to check the hard disk temperature. Surprise for me to find out that it was 52C. The maximum temp for this hard disk is 45C so is kind of hot.

What i need is a recomendation. I dont think i could install an extra fan because the case is not upgrade able. I dont see any space to do so. Or maybe a HD cooler or something. I need some ideas.

And sorry for my english. Not so good.

If you can't install any front fans in your case, yes, your best option would be a hard drive cooler.
Here's a list a coolers to get an idea, Vantec is a pretty good brand, don't think you could go wrong getting anything listed here.

May just depend if you have an extra 5 1/4 drrive bay to install.

That case is the skinny one, right? I don't think a hd cooler will work in your case. You'd just be blowing the same hot air across the drive. The only solution I really see is to cut the mesh out of the back, and insert a pci slot cooler in the space. You'd probably be better off buying a new case, and putting the Dell guts in that though.

I thought you had one of the really skinny cases. I just went to Dells site and saw that it's a mid tower case. That'll make things easier. When I had a similar Dell case, I zip tied a 80mm fan on the outside of the case over the spot where the heat normally exhausts, and ran the wires through the spot where the case joins together.

Here's a picture of what I'm talking about. This also shows where you can cut the grill out and install a slot cooler I put mine there because I had all of my pci slots filled. If you have room in a pci slot, then you can use it the normal way.

i have dealt with some over-heating hard drives in the past by
putting thermal paste on the side, where it bolts to the drive cage.
then the drive cage becomes a heat sink. works real good on
a Shuttle with 2 x 160 GB Parallel ATA drives. when i stuck the
second one in, it got real hot. i added the thermal paste &
glued a small heat sink fan to the side of the drive cage.

the case can make a real good heat sink for the drives if you
make a low-resistance thermal circuit between the heat source
(the drive) and the case.
