I just ordereed one with the 1gig and DVD burner for approx $480 delivered. So, do you mean I can make this lighter by replacing the dvd burner with some sort of plastic placeholder?

The answer is yes. But i had a very hard time finding the spacer seperately.

Theres a total of 3 of these floating around my friends and family. 2 have develped problems. The original one i got when the 600m was first announced, had a creaky keyboard and about 2+ yrs later, one of the memory slots crapped out. The second one my sister had is working fine. The third unit my friend ordered about 6 months ago, developed an issue with its usb port. That machine was being used in a photo kiosk that my friend operates in a mall, so its not typical usage.

Overall, i would still recommend them, for normal use they hold up well, and bang for the buck is very good.
FWIW i think this deal is dead tho, cant seem to find the 600m on dell to buy one.

Well now. Seems the 600m is no longer on their site. Anybody else not getting it also?

There's also the issues with a flimsy keyboard and hot hard drive under the palmrest. I'm thinking about canceling my order and going with a more modern laptop like the 630m or xps 140.

i've never had an issue with it slowing down while playing games. the hard drive does get warm under the palm rest. it isn't really hot though. the keyboard is a little flimsy on this model, but sometimes it's just installed improperly and isn't fully seated down on the other components. pressing on it in the top corners tends to help.

*sigh* Should've gotten in last night. The 600M is gone and I'm settling for the B120 instead.

With 256mb RAM and CD burner it was an average deal, but the free upgrade the other day to 1gb RAM and DVD burner made it really a hot deal for a "budget" laptop. I was sooo close to pulling the trigger myself, and if I knew it would be discontinued I may have. But I'll just wait around for a few months for another similar deal.

IMHO basically it's a consumer choice, if they want a decent internet surfing, MS Office laptop with some modest gaming capability, go for a hot deal like this $500 one. If you can go double that $1000 or slightly higher, you are likely going for slightly newer components and an ATI X-300 card (modest gaming) or NVidia 6800/7800 (heavy gaming).

There are a few fair deals on this laptop with the 1GB & DVD Burner configuration on fleabay. Best deal there I saw was $425 + $49 shipping.

I cancled my original order for this laptop with the 256MB of RAM & CD Burner & got in on the other EPP deal. Paid $509 shipped but others seemed to find a way to get it for $460 or a little less.

What is EPP ?

I don't like the eBay deals because they are probably refurbished (and not necessarily by the manufacturer... )

EPP is Dell's Employee Purchase Program. The ones on Ebay are more than likely the $480 NEW ones with the 1 Gig Ram and DVD R/W bought on the latest Hot Deal (in other words, new and not refurb as you stated).

Either sign up your personal company or you may already work for an EPP Qualified Business.

I signed up my personal business over a year ago for coupons this is the first time I've actually used it.
