You may want to jump on this deal before the high demand gets the better of the pricing.
You may not see the speculated $266 price for a while.

Try MicroCenter if you have a location nearby. They now feature CPU pricing that matches on-line CPU pricing. Every couple days they adjust their prices ...

Very, very tempting to buy at the @ 299 price.

With the occasional price jumps from newegg on hot items....

I agree. I see many people here saying the price "Will Be" $266. If you think these e-tailers are going to sell these chips for no profit, you're crazy.

Mwave is making a whole $7 (plus any extra off the S&H beyond the actual cost to ship). I don't think you'll see it much lower than that, unless of course Intel cuts their prices again.

You think NewEgg orders in 1000 batches?

Example...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16819115003
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/....jsp?ProductCode=80860

The E6600 price, in batches of 1000 is $224.

You think they are losing $1 per cpu, plus the cost of the box, peanuts, and shipping?

I think not.

Interesting...

It's also interesting that a E6750 costs WAY LESS than this (and is faster).

But anyway, I stand corrected. They must order 10k at a time or something (wonder what the prices are for that quantity)

Shipping at Mwave is $10 or so, so I grabbed one.

Prices might fall $10-$20 in the next few weeks, but IMHO, the increased demand is going to keep it from going much under $260 in the immediate future. I would also anticipate supply shortages.

And, as for reputation, mWave is fine. I've bought from them at least a dozen times. I think Newegg's a bit better, but not in any serious way.

I'm glad the prices have finally dropped; I've been sitting on all the other
components for this system for a couple of months!

I'm waiting for the G0 stepping of the Q6600, though, which should be available
within a week or two. The first reputable local or mail order vendor that has
a retail box G0 for me gets my order.

Actually in some senses even the G0 isn't good enough -- there's been a lot of
discussion about some of the fairly horrible and 'unfixable' (i.e. Intel says they WON'T
fix them) bugs in the Core2 Duos andQuad Core CPUs from Intel. Very shoddy work
to leave things that compromise the entire security and stability/performance of your PC
as CPU bugs and take a "I don't care" attitude. But I guess if you're doing very
limited kinds of computing with them that doesn't so much encounter the problems
and don't care about the security / OS related bugs they can be still useful.

I was going to upgrade to the Q6600 myself but I think a more worthy upgrade for me would be Penryn. My rig is plenty fast with my OC'd e4300! I think I will spend my money in the short term on 2 more gigs of ram and a better gpu. I just don't think there would be a huge benefit for me to upgrade my cpu right now. I am still madly in love with my e4300 !

also, many major retailers receive "kick backs" based on total amount sold. So many major stores can afford to sell for less. Also, the $266 price for 1000 is a guess. It always varies. As I said, give it a few days, perhaps a week, read your harry potter book, and then buy a quad core. I, like many others have waited this long, another few days or week is another drop in the bucket.
