This is a rebadged NEC 1300A drive, which is a very good drive. And it's retail packaged, so you get a bundle of software with it (HotBurn, MyDVD, Cineplayer, etc.)

I know for a fact that in the past this Iomega burner was a 1300A rebadge. I've seen one. Now, have they changed suppliers? That I can't say. But I would guess no...

You can try to look up any drive that has +R at dvdplusrw.org

Here's a comparison of Iomega and the NEC 1300A, it seems a match: comparison link

The I/O Magic and TDK dual format drives appear to be the 1300A as well.

Sometimes you can tell by the label on the drive, too, of course.

PXC - I don't see the "participating dealers only....' on the form.....

There are 3 different UPCs for the "4x Dual DVD+/-RW":
742709326790
742709328527
742709327247 <--- the one for this deal.

Unless someone can verify that this particular UPC is an NEC 1300A, I wouldn't count on it.

Also, has anyone checked that this rebate is valid for a purchase at Amazon? I posted the wording on Iomega's rebate page above, but no one answered ("Offer good August 17, 2003 ? November 22, 2003 at participating dealers only.").

Looks like both rebates require same original UPC from the DVD drive.

Not looking good....:disgust:

I don't see that "participating dealers" stuff on the rebate form I'm looking at, taken directly from the Iomega site.

And who cares about that Adaptec tie-in rebate? I mean, who wants that Adaptec product for $170? The $30 rebate on the drive itself is the good deal.

I called the iomega rebate center and this product qualifies. 32724 is embedded in the last barcode listed on the rebate form. It is in the title of the item on amazon.

The UPC may well be more about tracking which stores it's sold at than the actual drive that's in the box. You don't see the kind of mystery-drive-in-a-box with DVDRs that you used to see on CDR drives.

I said "the Iomega rebate page." I meant the actual page on iomega.com that links all the rebate forms.

But it looks like it was verified above that amazon does count.

Naw, J&R sells 2 of the other UPC code packages and the packages are actually different. It does look like Iomega is packaging different drives in different UPC packages. I'm going to check out the 742709327247 UPC package before ordering. Fry's or CompUSA should carry it.

Naw, turns out the different UPC codes are different products, the other two are "Super Drive" models that can handle DVD-RAM, at a higher price.

It's a good bet to be an NEC. Good deal.

Another question, which do you think is better,

This Rebadged NEC 1300A drive for $92

or

The LiteOn LDW-411S which is rumored for $90 at OD on Black Friday?

the $2 for buying this drive online seems alot nicer than fighting through the crowds and traffic early Friday morning, but if the NEC drive is worse than the LiteOn then I guess I will just have to wait until Thanksgiving

Any insight would be helpful as to which is more compatible, and and all around better drive

Thanks in advance

I jumped on it.
I think the NEC is better. There's plenty of hacks for it, and some smart guys are even working on something to allow the NEC 1300A to adjust bitsetting.

The 411S has mixed reviews.

wookie, dont forget u'll also have to pay tax. and who knows how big the rebates gonna be.

personally, im gonna get this one. i dont feel like waking up at 4 or 5am, standing in line, and not being able to get anything...although i do have a $15 off $100 coupon i could use at OD...but there are no guarantees that i can get one.

That model is definitely a NEC 1300A. I just found the firmware updates for this drive and all are NEC (Iomega was too lazy to even change the title).

Compuplus is advertising the same drive for $113.00 - $30 MIR = $83.00 AR, but they charge shipping. If you can do a BVG, you can get back another $8.99. http://www.compuplus.com/insidepage.php3/1001195

Thanks OP.
