Sweet find! Anyone know if you can put this drive into a 5.25" external enclosure and use it as a external drive? Like one of those USB 2.0 or Firewire IDE enclosures?

Most CDROMs work in those enclosures so I don't know why this wouldn't work. Anybody tried that?

I would love to get this, but only have a laptop at the moment, and moving it around to several friend's computers would be cool.

Writing at full speed in any USB2/firewire should work fine. Some enclosures only support PIO3 (16.6MB/s transfer rate), so if you put a DVD drive capable of 16x read speed, it will never be able to reach the maximum transfer rate since 16x exceeds PIO3 transfer speeds by 4MB/s. 12x DVD read speed is fine, though.

Well...I've been waiting for a dual format DVD to get below a hundred bucks and this means I don't have to stand in line at some B&M on BF...plus I had a whole $1.30 worth of Amazon nickels to reduce the price even more If the rebate materializes this is a pretty good deal...thanks OP

Although buy.com says it is a +rw not dual format... The mfg part number they have listed checks out for iomega for being dual format.

Am I reading something wrong, isn't the one at buy.com only a + drive? The one at J&R is a +/- drive. The model numbers aren't even the same. Can someone help me out, because I would love a +/- drive for under $100.

You can't order the IM****** numbers from Staples.com. They are Phone ordres. The IM numbers are Ingram Micro order items. (Special Order).

the staples.com order has to be done over the phone. You won't find that IM # on the website. It's a valid deal, I did it too.

Engineer, I know you posted about staples but then after that people wanted to declare the deal dead and change the title. I was addressing that issue that it is NOT a dead deal..

Anyway about the hacked firmware, I see that they've got hacked Iomega version and NEC versions. Does anyone know if I can use the NEC firmware and make it a true NEC drive and then use the NEC firmware from then on, ignoring anyand everything related to Iomega??
