I just ask because dell usually ties everything together espically in the OS. For instance a dell windows XP disk won't install on a non dell computer, would I have similar issues if i did the above?

I've installed a dell windows xp disc on a non dell machine.
Worked fine.
XP home FYI. Maybe I got lucky.

A dell windows xp will install on any computer, you just have to work the activation part out.

It's only a 128mb not the 256mb DDR
You're falling below my "people that can't help themselves don't deserve to be spoon fed" threshold.

This has been discussed to death, it can be overclocked beyond 9800 pro speeds. Visit the video forum or rage3d.

He thinks he is getting ripped off because he has to pay $130 for a $240 card, and expects a $430 card.

Dells are really silent. You can't even tell it's running. If you do add another HD or what not, make sure you get those fluid bearing ones,

Thats good news. Off topic, but, how can I check if my HD has fluid bearings? I recently bought a WD 200 GB.

Can you overclock a Dell?

I am thinking about getting the 4600. But I naturally want to OC the 2.4. If it OC well, I can save myself the cost of buying a mother board.

The reason why I ask is this:

Dell, 2.4 Gig
+9800 NP
+ tax
-$150 rebate
-10%
-3% fatcash
= about $510.

+ 512 mb Kingston hyper X $100 = $610. I have 2 x 80 Gig Hd, so no need there.

Or I can build from scratch.

P4 2.4C =$170
Ausus P4P800 =$130
Kingston hyperX =$100
9800 NP =$240
Case + PSU = $50
------------------------
Total = $690.

So if I buy from Dell, I it's $80 cheaper, plus I get:
256 mb extra ram (I'm sure not the best, but still good for something)
Windows XP (a bonus, or I got win98 from my old comp).
Win Office XP (I know this is worth a lot of money, but I play game most of the time). So over well, Dell looks good right now.

But if I can't OC a Dell, all of it's advantage goes out the window, after all, there is a big difference in performance between a Dell at 2.4 ghz and a PC running at 3+ ghz.

Any one knows about the dell OC issue? I'm new, and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think you can o/c a Dell (I hope I'm wrong).

Dell does not give you the option to increase the multiplier or FSB speeds in the BIOS. You can't overclock a Dell mobo. This is (or was) still a pretty hot deal for parts though, IMO.

Thanks y'all.

So what do guys think of buying the Dell, keep everything except the mobo?

So that's:

$510 for the Dell
+ $130 for a Asus P4P800 mobo
+ $100 for 2x256 mb Kingston HyperX DDR
= $740.

So is $740 for a P4 2.4 with 640 mb ram and 9800 NP, still a hot deal or should I wait for something better? I haven't been to this board for very long. So do you veterans think that Dell will come out with a better deal than that within 2-3 months? Thanks in advance.

I maybe wrong but I think Dell's cases are propietary which means you can't fit an Asus Motherboard inside.

Exactly, the trouble is front panel connector which is special and in one piece. That invalidates the use of the case for any other motherboard than the one used by Dell. Basically the case is good for garbage.
The whole idea here is to get Canterwood mobo (if possible), the CPU, and Windows.
And you must get HT processor because Pentium B is nothing, AMD processors beat them. There is a huge difference between Pentium B and 533 mobo when compared to Canterwood and Pentium C.
