I wish they had options to step up the CPU. Really considering this for an HTPC.

Looks good. Sadly I don't need a case, mobo and processor though... Guess I'll stick with plans for a celeron 1037 as a htpc of some sort.

Yeah, I saw those. Currently configuring a cart. Not sure I am ready to bite quite yet. I still have 6 or so months of DirecTV left and this will be for a DVR replacement.

Very interesting in how well these would do for that task at that low of wattage.

Cripes, if I just hadn't bought the Chromebox a week ago, I'd be all over one of these.

how would this compare to a core 2 duo e6600 from a web browser perspective for primary use? slow clock speed would be detriment I am guessing...

I havent been able to find anything about how well it would work for transcoding.

It does have VCE, Video Codec Engine, AMD's answer to Intel's QuickSync. I don't know if it's supported in drivers and apps yet, but if / when it does, these little low-power chips should be good for transcoding.

I would expect the E6600 to be slightly faster in ST tasks, of which web browsing would be one. However, for watching online videos, the E6600 needs a modern discrete GPU, which can double the C2D's power costs.

The Kabini quad-core can do it all in 25W or so.

Edit: My bad. I was mentally comparing the 2.05Ghz Kabini to the E6600. The 1.3Ghz
Sempron in this bundle, is quite a bit slower.

It's going to be a lot slower. The 2GHz version about equals an E8400 in heavily multithreaded tasks, but web browsing speed isn't something that's going to be loading all 4 cores. Your CPU is 80% the speed of an E8400 and this Sempron is 65% the speed of the 2GHz Kabini.

Not to tread crap but I really miss the days when CPU performance from 10 years ago was outdated and not even sold.

Nothing illustrates the longevity of modern CPUs (and how little they have advanced) than people clamoring over something with such low performance.

Anyone know if Kabini supports IOMMU/AMD-Vi? Doesn't look like the manual for the motherboard as an option for it even though Asrock is pretty good about that feature.

This combo is way more energy efficient, much smaller, and costs a fraction of what it did 10 years ago. Please excuse me while I "clamor".

If one were to assemble this combo "minimalist style," with no graphics card and just a small SSD, what would be the physically smallest (and lowest wattage) power supply you could use?

For some reason, this mini-ITX case is listed under "Server Chassis", but I think it would make an ideal HTPC.

There are some "Habey" cases that are mini-ITX too, listed under "Server Chassis" in Newegg as well that might fit the bill.

I'd expect picoPSU to be the smallest (it's DC-DC so there's an external brick required). There is an 80w version (96% Efficiency) and that should easily cover this. You would need a molex->4pin CPU adapter for the Kabini mobos. There's also a 60w version but it's rarely any cheaper so why do it?

Thanks! I noticed those Habey cases. Habey also makes it's own motherboards. Love your deals, VirtualLarry!
