Another vote for PanicWare's Pop-Up Stopper. I have the middle mouse button configured as Ctrl so when I want a new window to open I just click it along with the left button on the link. It becomes second nature after a while.

So, you update your hosts file with an entry every time you get a pop-up window at a website? I can see where that's much easier than using Panicware's pop-up stopper. :Q

Thanks for the link, its an interesting site. They have tests for the different types of popups on the top of the screen. Although I don't understand why the guy who wrote that web page, uses Proxomitron and another popup stopper. Proxomitron stops all popups by itself. It even passes all the tests for me, that he has it labeled as failing.

is ne1 able to stop netzero's popups? this is the only thing i can't stop w/ CB or popup stopper. thanks

With the exception of the popups that say "please support netzero by clicking on ads" (the annoying in-system ones) you can stop all nz popups by doing something really simple. Go to your internet options, to the security section. Select "Restricted Sites" and go to modify the security settings. In there, disable everything. EVERYTHING. Once that's done, hit okay and then go to sites. Add the following url: http://nztv.untd.com . This is where all the popups come from. Once that's done you won't get any more popups from NZ.

thanks yuki,

i'll give it a shot...nz's banners aren't the problem, it's the constant windows popup that i can't get rid of. hopefully your tips will help. thanks again.

i've tried opera, but some sites just don't come up right, hence i stuck w/ ie and crazy browser...i'll have to give phoenix/firehawk a try sometime

actually, the host files are great to get rid of inline ads. i haven't seen a yahoo.com ad since i've used host files...it shows up as "advertisements" instead of a picture/jpeg/gif. this helps when i am on 56k

I can vouch for Free Surfer MK II.... just search google for that phrase. Installed it about 2 months ago and so far the count is up to 1116 popups killed. Not 100%, but probably above 95% which is more than enough for my needs.

I agree 100%. Free Surfer MK II is by far, the best pop up killer I have ever used. I can finally surf again without all of the junk. I've had mine for 3 months and it's killed over 800 pop ups. The wierd thing is, it does not kill the legitimate popups (like filling out a survey etc.) except in very rare occurences.

Sometimes the best thing in life are free.

3 weeks ago I would have voted for AnalogX's Pow program, but ever since then, I can't have it runing or it will kill any browser window I have open. Too bad, too, since I spent a year adding sites and pop-ups to my kill list. Hate to see that one go, but I can't figure out a way around it.

Thanks for the list about the other programs. I've been meaning to find another.

I'm also a supporter of Proxomitron. It's so much more than a pop up blocker with it's ability to rewrite code. If you can handle how to configure it, it's the way to go I think.

prox is best one evar.

vote for mozilla, the best browser out there! Opera comes in second for me.

both kill IE in features and render speed.

built-in pop-up blocking is great. Haven't seen a single pop-up for 2 years now.

There are apparently some popups that when added to Pow! Kill any instance of a browser. I have not figured out the pattern yet though. If you take that one popup out of your list, it will work fine. I back up my dat occasionally just in case.

I have been hearing about Mozilla from friends for a while and this forum just put me over. I downloaded Firebird and it is so great. I am a convert after five minutes of use. I think it should be prescribed by doctors as an anti-depressant. My online experience has suddenly gotten happier now that Internet Explorer is out of the picture. Now, I am left with this one burning desire: to get rid of Internet Explorer.

Is it possible? From what I've unearthed Microsoft doesn't really say anything conclusive about it. I tried Add/Remove but it just removed the most recent update and now Internet Explorer is no longer on the list, but of course it's still on my desktop. Do I need to uninstall every single XP Hotfix or should I not waste my time b/c it's impossible to remove IE from XP? Thanks.

Well, for the past several hours, I have tried about every popup blocker listed, seeing what I liked best and least.

All in all, my favorite is Crazy Browser. It adds SO MUCH to the browsing expericence--and it actually uses IE as its base, so I don't lose out on the security updates, etc.

Crazy Browser aside, the only stand-alone I thought was worthy was AdShield and Pow! I'd have probably ended up sticking with one of those two if I didn't go for Crazy Browser instead.

Don't "lose out" on security updates? Why don't you avoid them completely by not using IE altogether? Use a standards compliant browser *cough* Mozillia/firebird *cough* Opera *cough* as well as one that "adds SO MUCH to the browsing experience" right IN the browser itself instead of an add-on like crazy browser?

Side note: I tried crazy browser before I discovered the joys of phoenix/firebird back in the day when I was trying non-IE alternatives. I used it for a whole week before dropping it due to crashing every single day....much more than IE by itself.

Seriously, you guys just need to TRY Firebird in a week or two when 0.6 comes out. Don't be scared of the "not even 1.0 version" because this thing is BETTER than most browsers at 5.0+ versions already!
Just TRY it. Delete it if you don't like it. It doesn't even install, it just runs a plain .exe out of a directory so all it takes to delete it is to delete that directory. It does NOT bury itself into your system like IE.

-Unwanted popups are blocked AUTOMATICALLY. No configuration needed for this, period.
(It lets through pop-ups that are *supposed* to pop up. Like clicking on a button that needs another window to open. don't worry about them not working.)
