nice price for 3200, but all i need is 2100. Anyone seen a deal on 2100 for around $75-80?

edit: thanks bac, already froogle plenty. what I meant to say was anyone know and GOOD ram for that price (ie, non generic stuff that had good warranty) and with cheap or free shipping.

are these compatible to Dell labtops like an 8500? I hear alot of stories of sodimm incompatibilities with dell notebooks.

I'd usually say do some research.
But since I'm bored, and had 3 minutes to spare, I went to dell --> support --> Inspirion forums --> upgrades, and found the following thread:

Since you probably won't read the whole thing, it says that someone using a 5150 (apparently another 'memory sensitive' model) is using a 512 stick of kingmax just fine.

Excuse my bitter reply, but it annoys me when people won't do 2 mins of research for themselves.

Isn't PC3200 DDR400? Shouldn't this be PC2700?

you beat me to it

and i got this ram from newegg to use in my compaq x1000, and it works fine, although the x1000's current firmware version doesn't support pc2700 memory yet, so it's been running at max pc2100 speeds. it doesn't have the kingmax chips though, instead it used PQI if i remember correctly.

And also, the rumours are saying that we're going to get a BIOS update soon, that supports PC2700. I hope it's true. It would make my zt3000, vewy vewy happy.

More info than some may need:

DDR SDRAM is DDR SDRAM.
If it's 2100, or 4000, it's still DDR SDRAM 184 (or however many) pins.

So yes. DDR SDRAM that is manufactured to work at 400mhz, will work at slower speeds, like 266mhz.

Rambus is not DDR SDRAM. And thus is incompatable.

PC400 rambus is physically different from PC800 rambus (different pins as well, I believe), and thus is not compatible with each other. Only one will work in your system.

I am about to order this memory.. but before I do, I hope u guys can help with a basic question. i searched on dell's page and couldn't find an answer. I have the 5150 and was wondering can I use this 512 chip with my existing 256 chip. I have 1 slot open now.. so is it ok to hve 2 different memory chips? Thanks..

Yes.

You will just run at the slowest speed.

If you dell has PC2100, and you use top notch PC3200, your system will still run at 2100 speed.

BUT, you may get better performance with 1 stick of 512 pc3200 at 2100 speed, than both sticks at 2100 speed, because of speed differences between the memory.

Only way to find out is to install it and benchmark it. :gift:

If the motherboard supports only 266mhz, then the 333mhz will function the same.
Because you are underclocking the memory, it is possible that you can tighten up the timings resulting in slightly better performance.
It is also 'possible' that the 333mhz will run cleaner than your 266mhz (less or no errors). But if you have good 266mhz, you shouldn't be getting errors anyhow.
